Williams, 106 GTI,

  Renault Sport Clio 172
I used to own a 182 cup which I thought was awesome cleaned it nearly every day and did a few cool mods to it. I now own a 172 (not the cup version) which I only use for weekends as I have a Vectra CDTi for work because I work 40 miles away. But since I bought it im struggling to fall in love with it becaue I just dont like the look of it anymore. When im driving it I feel as if the car is really narrow & tall and I dont feel as comfortable as I did in my 182. (its hard to explain lol) and I miss those stunning dual centre exhausts on the 182. So ive decided to get a different car something that I like the look of. I like the look of the Williams and the 106 GTi I cant afford nothing like the 197 or another 182 but would like to stick with a Renault. Any opinions on the Williams Etc would be cool as I dont really know much about there performance & handling etc :rasp:

106's are cheap to run, insure, maintain, repair and buy parts for. I've been looking into them a lot recently. Thry get good reviews, speed wise they're not as quick as the williams, evo says 0-100 they're 2 seconds behind.

I don't know a lot about williams but the owners always have glowing reviews for them.

Imo a mint standard looking Williams still looks ace, i'd have one. In terms of a day to day car i'd have a 106 gti though.

Its more expensive trying to run and maintain a mint williams trust a man whos spent thousands!

I'd try the 106 if your not happy with the 172

The Williams was one of the best, and still is provided you get a good one. They are old now so obviously, they can be problematic. The 106 is probably the more sensible option in terms of reliability but just depends on how the car has been looked after.

Performance is very close and they both handle very well due to being light but I'd stick with the 172. Just go and look at a Fiesta ST if you think the 172 looks tall and narrow!

  53 Clio's & counting
i think the main factor is your build mate, im 6ft 3, average build and iv owned a 106 xsi and iv just bought a saxo as a run around, and iv owned 3 Clio 16vs one which had a willy enigne and i would take the willy over the 106 any day of the week, mainly because there is no where i can put me feet in the saxo/106 lol

I nearly bought a VTS last year but chose a GTi-6 instead which was s**t they were a nightmare to lower cuz they dont have rear springs just a torsion bar! sold it after 2 months then got the 172. Looks wise I would rather the Williams but most of em are ragged!

106 has the same rear suspension setup as the 306.

As for the Williams being 'ragged', bullshit. They'll be driven as hard as any other hot hatch, it's just they're slightly older.

Thanks for informing me about the rear suspension that could swing me in the direction of a williams! I hated the cornering of the GTi-6 the back feels like its gunna lose control even at normal cornering speeds!

Pmsl! The handling on the 106 is one of it's best features :S

I wouldent know about the 106's handling! but I just said I had the 306 GTi-6 and that had the same torsion bar suspernsion and it was terrible!

A 106 gti isn't going to handle like a gti-6 WTF!

I'd be tempted to drive another Gti-6. The one I've driven felt awesome around corners. Better than my 172, really. All down to personal preference though!

The gti6 has a quicker top end speed I found! but just didnt like its handling. But yeah I guess its just what u prefer!

But you said it was swinging you in the direction of the williams :S
So you really need to find out how the 106 handles not the 306.

Mk1 clio's are rust buckets. You will struggle to find a good con Willy.
Pretty true, although I have seen some very nice ones for sale on here. Obviously i've not seen them in the metal, but they have sold rather quickly so I guess they must be good ones.

Yep will do have to try a 106 at some stage thanx! ive checked ebay for clio williams and there are 1 or 2 good ones the rest are pretty dodgy tho.

tbh, i would chose a 106 over williams due to the fact that it is a newer car & more disireble!

You woot!? The 106 is just a less chavtastic rarer vts!

If you can find a minty willy 3 (later ones in Monaco blue) you will be laughing! Mates have had 106's before and none of them have been that taken by them - my 1.8 16v had one of them for breakfast lunch and dinner so f**k knows what the 2.0 16v lump i had wouldve done to it!

Hold on hold on, most people go out and buy a 2k williams and expect it to be good - it won't be.

Your looking at 3.2 to 3.5k for a good williams, best of the best 4 upwards - even then I'd be looking at changing the entire suspension setup for new genuine parts to refresh the handling, I doubt a lot of people have actually 'got' the handling that the cars so well known for, they jump in a 90k shagged suspensioned car and expect miracles.

Torsions bars on the willy too - and if your looking at lowering it anyway then it shouldn't be on your list - it certainly doesn't need lowering you'll ruin its classic handling.

I'm fiercely protective of willys! :)

williams if you can be bothered to look after it. also im sure williams like the 106 has a torsion bar setup

Your all talking like 106's are low mileage and reliable which 9 out of 10 (like the williams) arent..

106 Gti's break more than any car i've worked with if my mates are anything to go by. I'd argue a williams is built much better imo.

  williams and trophy
yes to the older person...to the young boy racer gti wins

cant do this in a gti tho can ya??

and daz...jus cos urs was a shitter that needed £000's spendin......doesnt mean they all do lol. ;)

admittedly, a rust free 1 is getting very hard to find now, impossible even. even the new clios are susceptable to the tin worm.....theres been enough threads on it. lol.

for pure driving satisfaction..............i dont think u can beat a williams tbh.

btw the car in vid is a sub £1000 car...................as it stands. tell me another car u can have as much fun in, for as long, for as little money.

Thats brilliant 2live - makes me want!!! Haha

Cant beat the sound a Valver/Williams makes with such few and hardly costly mods either! Pure fun time!

The 306 Has passive rear wheel steering, these things are awesome little handeling cars. However, when they go soft they give a wiggly woo experience. I had the Xsara VTS, same engine, good chassis and shared a lot of components. I removed the Rear passive steering and made my own solid rear mounts the results were lush.

Personally, i would go for the Xsara Over the 306 for 1k you can have 167 brake/148lbf with a pretty good driving experience.

The williams Yes is a good car, but they are getting old now, To get the best from it you need to put some money in to the parts which would of gone soft. I ran mine for a few months and didnt get along with the engine to be honest. On track in standard form it did very well. Working on the enigne is a bugerr mind.

From the two above, i would go for the Saxo VTS Not because its a chavtastic.. but because its cheaper and when you destroy it who cares :D
