yea i must say i agree with GuyS here, if you have a wad of cash and are wanting a williams you would pay this as it must be a minter! Only 8.8k as well! But you would have to be silly rich to pay it

i don't think thats un reasonable.. on ebay last week, a escort rs turbo with 1 owner, 4400 miles 1986 D plate, went for £9000!!

I owned a valver new in the early 90's. Speaking from experience, the cars that were on sale then, compared with even the mintest higher mileage examples now are not comparable. I drove alot of valver and looked at even more before i ended up getting my 172. To be honest (and no disrespect to anyone with a valver), even the 3k examples were tired and lame, compared to my new one in 1993. No comparison. You just cant knock miles off a car no matter how much money you spend.

The chances are anyone who buys this wont be interested in traffic light grand prix or proving his dad is bigger than your dad. He will be a collector. And to a collector it is worth that simply because, there are no real alternatives on the market. Its not like the market is flooded with Williams on 8k miles. Therfore it s a sellers market. My father followed the sale of the first williams off the Bohnhams web site and thought that the cars value (if he sold it) would be around 20 to 25k.

My father traded classic and collectable cars for some time (not the usual s**t, but very rare and hard to find cars), and when you realise someone will pay 80k for an ex rally car gordini that ragnotti once sat in, or 40k for a 5 Turbo 2 in good but not great shape, you begin to realise 10k for a clio williams is not that much.

If its as described on ebay a few months back then it is worth 10 k to someone. If i had the cash id would buy it, but my budget was only 5k, hence i got a 172.

Would you not say that, if you overhauled the entire suspension, including every single component, and put in a newly rebuilt engine and gearbox, it would not be very near to the original?

I understand it will have more rattles through wear and tear on the interior, but I wouldn't have thought that an overhauled car was 'tired and lame'. (and, if anything, the engines get quicker when older! lol)

just my opinion of course!

sorry, but the collectors comments are correct. This is one of the first, and to some, the original Williams, and will be worth the money for a collector. He stows it in cotton wool. This was the best original hot hatch according too so many sources. It is also limited edition IIRC, after that they went on to build more and more based on it's huge impact, Remember the 172 Cup that sold more than the 172mk2 in the time it was avaialble? Was it cost you can't tell me it was that all owners feel the force, so to speak. That was never limited.

How many of these 500 are still running and more importantly as mint as this.

After even more years this car will be worth even more because of it's rarity and the fact of what it is.

This car is not being sold to be driven surely??????

You would have to reshell it with a new shell. The shells get sloppy after a while and they just never feel the same.

They only made circa 400 of the original Williams iirc. I agree, this probally wont be driven, which is a shame. I've got chassis number 25, bought it mint with only 30k on the clock just over two years ago, and I paid good money for it as it was utterly showroom condition (and still is). I bought it to drive it and since then I've put 20 k on the clock. I disagree about the generalisation that the examples around today not being as good as the ones of a few years ago (though none will ever be new again!!). If you look for one, you'll find it. My Williams drove better than a nealy new 172 I almost bought just prior to finding the Williams, so old or low milage doesnt always mean degraded in any way.

Didnt even look that clean when on ebay, unless you want a car to tuck up and not use there is no real point in it, you could not buy it and start using it. If you did you waould proably be faced with more problems than one that has been used on a regular basis.

for what a car will do, say 170,000 miles maybe in its life time and this williams has only just been run in probly lol what a baby

But the likelyhood is that if you want a good example to actually use, this won't be it. I've read so much about actually looking for a car with average-ish miles on it (8-12k per year) rather than paying through the nose for one with stupidly low miles, as chances are you will have less problems with the one thats been well used as long as its been maintained.

Can't really understand the whole buying to collect thing, as at the end of the day it will just sit there until you sell it or die. Seems a shame that it never actually got some use and made one or more people very happy driving it over the years.

Id be very interested in seeing more about this car, its past etc...

From the pictures i saw on ebay i wasn't very impressed by all accounts; it was still running on origonal tyres IIRC and that almost worrys me on a 12yr old car... certainly makes me wonder about what else has or has not been done!

I bought mine on 18k and one of the first things i noticed was that the wheel bearings had started to dry-out, and im scheduling to do all the bushes & mounts in the next year just out of due course... Id say a price of £7-8K is not unrealistic but the markets thinning out and nowadays i only tend to see two buyer types wen it comes to the willy:

1. Have a few £K to spend, heard about the williams etc and "expect" a bargain

2. Have a fair few £K to spend but wouldnt justify a williams over a early 172 etc...

Hope someone buys it and looks after it but he has obviously had trouble shifting it.. its been on autotrader, ebay, fast car now and even a few classic car mags.

what a waste of a car that was built to be driven and enjoyed. I cant see it as a collectable (sorry to all williams owners) as at the end of the day it is a still only a clio. I can imagine that in its day and even now the williams is a car that will out a smile on your face when its on the edge through a corner not sat in a warehouse somewhere underneath a dust sheet.

lmao...like the rs500 was just a sierra...and the mini cooper s was just a mini....these cars are now worth a fortune compared to their lower specced brothers.....think about it.

i personally cant see the point in buying it to store it.....they were billed as the best drivers car, the best handling fwd ever...etc etc etc

to really get the proper enjoyment out of it.....then it needs to be driven.....its like buyin a brand new hd 47" plasma screen, to sit it in the corner, unplugged, and sit watching a 14" portable black and white telly instead...
