Probably because it was nightmare to find anything! Well at least it was when I played with the RC ages ago.

Because it works well and people like it. You could argue why people prefer ignition keys on cars rather than the stupid proximity unlock/key-card ignition systems. Some things rarely need changing - and the Start button was a prime example of that. It's logical, it's straight-forward, it's customizable. Why Microsoft would want to touch it in the first place is the more puzzling question for me. Touch-screen dependency can be the only reason.
Another way to look at it was the fact that Microsoft have put the button back. They won't have made that decision lightly - so the weight of public angst against its removal must have been significant.

They're not exactly shouting about it are they. Guess in a way its an admission of a mistake.
Seeing as I don't use Metro, this update means fcuk all to me. Nice to know the lock screen has the option to display all your child pornography at random as soon as the police turn the computer on, and it searches like my iPhone has been doing for years now.

Actually pretty happy with this update. Only started using Windows 8 since I got my Surface but it's starting to all make sense and come together.
its not a start button like we are used to, it just takes you to the start screen as mentioned.
this version only really works on tablets imo, its designed for touch screens, and even then apps that aren't designed for it (most of them) just run on the normal old fashioned desktop anyway, but without the convenience of the traditional start button.
Windows 7 still rules for anything other than a tablet.

Yes but if you want the desktop on Windows 8, it's only ever one click away...
Or no clicks if you use Classicshell.

When I first had a go on it ages ago, we had a competition at work who could be quickest opening notepad, or calculator....just a basic program!

It takes 2 seconds if that. If you have never driven a paddle shift in your life, never even seen one or knew they existed and I sat you in the car would you instantly know how to change gear? Are paddle shifts bad because of this?
Things change, some are new and require learning and some adaptation. Windows 8 was aimed at touch because that's the way the market is shifting. The experience sometimes wasn't great on a non-touch device but its getting better. When you have an install base of over 1 billion users and need to make a change to align with the competition, whilst maintaining an upgrade path it's never easy. You could argue that Apple got it right by releasing separate desktop/mobile system but I think they will be looking to pull those together at some point as servicing both and trying to drive innovation down both branches isn't easy.

I was never a 'hater' of Windows 8, I just thought it was all rather pointless. Start using it on a touch enabled laptop or tablet and I reckon your thoughts will change, it did to me.
I'm sure it's lovely if you've got a touchscreen. But most of us don't use or want touchscreens.

Press the desktop button. And they're (basically) exactly the same.
All I'm saying is, the extra stuff (i.e Metro) isn't really worth bothering with unless you're using a tablet. If you're not, then just ignore it

unless I can buy a 52" touch screen TV and a massive pole with a finger on the end then this is no good to me then?! lol
So why have they included it on desktops? That's my point. I actually have to download software to stop Metro showing up all the time, essentially leaving me with windows 7. Why not just ship desktops and laptops with Windows 7?
Also I love how it decides it wants to restart to install some irrelevant updates, and there isn't a thing you can do about it other than restart early.

Well, the reason they did that... like it or not, is because it's likely the desktop will one day disappear completely. They've included it for people to get used to it. I'm not saying I agree with this approach completely though, I hope it stays in one form or another.
Turn off auto updating perhaps?

I might upgrade now. Although I'd rather do a full format as had OS for over 2 years now. Windows 7 is quite forgiving that way, hasn't slowed up at all. It's not so much that I don't like Windows 8, it's just that I don't need it. Windows 7 is pretty spot on.
