Can anyone explain the different ranges to wireless please?

I am in between homes at the moment and i have a Netgear DG834G. I presume this is the entry level for wireless and will ony suffice for through one wall for example?

I may have the need for a wireless signal to reach approx 40 foot from one end of a room through a thick wall of circa 3/4 bricks.

I will set up my current router soon to check the coverage but is anyone in a position to tell me whether i am wasting my time?

Is it worht spending over £100 on a router like the link:

netgear router

I guess this is the only way to overcome this (possible) problem...

any how, educate me please! :D

I would say it would be worth paying the extra £££ to get the best possible signal / coverage.
