Wires?

  182, 1.9 GTI
Want to wire my tomtom into my 182 so it has a constant neat power supply.

I have a new ciggy lighter socket (want to wire this into car power supply then hide behind dash) and will use the existing tomtom in car ciggy power lead as this steps down the voltage to 5volts and has a 2Amp fuse intergrated.

Is there a good place to take the power from? The existing ciggy lighter has 3 wires, a thick yellow middle wire, dark thinner wire and light blue thinner wire, the power is coming from the thick middle one and smaller dark one, anybody know what the lighter blue wire is for? Common earth?

Any feedback gratefully received,

Cheers, Matt.

One of them is for the light.

My lighter socket cable is... well some might see it as an artwork... I think it's a friggin mess. Already have 3 pieces drawing power from it..

The light blue wire is the illumination LED.
Dont forget the cigar lighter is ignition controlled so your Tom Tom will only charge/work when the ignition is on if you use this connection point

Yes of course, the LED is linked to the lights hence the third wire, when i tested the light blue wire it didnt show a voltage but i didnt have the lights on meaning it wouldn't....

Good point about ignition controlled voltage but this is ok as generally i only want it powered when ignition is on. Can always use battery power if i want to make a call etc with ignition off. The tomtom will turn itself off when it detects a shutoff of voltage, a nice touch i thought.
