dealers can order wolfrace wheels, you always see dealer "special editions" with wolfrace wheels sitting on forecourts.

going back to your original post though its still classed as a modification/optional extra so must be declared to the insurance company

Thing is, here lies a massive grey area. How exactly would someone know that unless they have thousands of posts on a clio forum?

Are they going to declare 80 year old Dorris' insurance invalid because of it? And if they're not, they can't then declare 18 year old Johnny's insurance invalid because of it, because who's to know who knows more about cars?

they wouldn't know and its an issue!, we had an insurance company refuse to pay out on my sisters 1.4 16v lupo sport that got rear ended because it had all been colour coded, we had no idea it had been colour coded as I didn't know a thing about them, we had driven past a garage she liked it so we bought it!

luckily after a few phone calls they eventually paid for the repair AFTER we paid the difference of adding the "modification" to the policy

What's the issue witht eh Insurance company? Are you trying to make a claim that they are refusing?

They haven't refused yet, i am waiting for a response today hopefully

What's the situation? We have insurance specialists on the site, if you explain what's going on they may be able to offer advice.

I had an Crash on Sunday, only i was involved. the car was recovered by police, then the insurance company have taken it for the damage to be valued, it was valued at £4000. they guy estimating the price told the insurance company what he thinks it would cost two days ago and we are waiting to hear back. My mum had one month insurance left on the last policy with me a named driver as i shared her car, so just changed the car on the policy over rather than taking a new policy out and canceling the last one with just one month left. Then before Wednesday(that's when the last one ended) i was going to take my own insurance policy out and notify them of everything. I believe when my mum changed the cars over she told them there was no modifications because the car is as we brought it from a Renault dealership( i haven't modified the car...). now they guy estimating the price has said it may be problem because the wheels aren't standard Renault wheels. When how would my mum that knows nothing about cars know this isn't a standard wheel and it isn't just an 'option' from new. We are waiting to hear back if it is written off or will be fixed. Or they may even come back to tell me it isn't insured because of that.

They are not OEM wheels and you can not get wolf race alloy wheels from the factory. They are accessories that the some dealerships fit. They should have been declared as aftermarket alloy wheels upon getting an insurance quote IMO.

So you'd say it's likely the insurance are going to come back and say the car isn't insured because my mum didn't know the wheels that we were sold by the Renault dealer with no head's up about insurance needed to be pointed out specifically?

Cheers

It's down to you to supply the insurers with the correct details. As they say, ignorance of the law excuses no one.

That said, when taking out a policy I am sure that they say something along the lines of - "To the best of your knowledge, you've provided the most honest representation of your car and your circumstances".

I reckon it will be OK personally.

So you'd say it's likely the insurance are going to come back and say the car isn't insured because my mum didn't know the wheels that we were sold by the Renault dealer with no head's up about insurance needed to be pointed out specifically?

okay thanks,
But to someone that knows nothing about cars, how would they be to know that isnt an option from new when we brought it from renault.
to my mum and most people that car is as standard we haven't amde any modifications and renault didn't inform us of any.

What have they said about the spoiler? I don't believe that is a standard fit accessory either.

They wouldn't and that's the grey area. My brothers car had them from the factory as well on a 57 plate mk3.

That said - My insurance company even ask you declare optional extras!!!

You'll be fine.
Motor insurance is regulated. If they get difficult about it, ask for their complaints procedure and tell them you are referring it to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) (whichever they are regulated by, they will tell you, they have to).
FOS and FCA take a very pro-consumer view on these things. If that's how you bought it and answered their questions in good faith, they'll instruct them to pay out.
It won't get that far though.

Yes, I bought a new Toyota a couple of years ago and the dealer didnt tell me that needed any insurance at all, its not upto them to run your whole life.

But as above, Im sure as you were honest, and had no reason to know, that the worse that will happen is just that the wheels themselves wont be covered, not that it will totally invalidate the policy.

Okay great cheers, They haven't said anything about the spoiler as i am still waiting to hear back if they will fix or write off so i'm guessing that's when they will let me know if they didn't think it was covered

Would anybody know when im likely to hear from the insurance what they plan to do? they were informed the estimated cost the day before yesterday.

thanks

This! I might have misunderstood you but it sounds as though it could reasonably look like an attempt at fronting (it reads like you bought a new car and insured it through your mum).

It's always good to know what to expect to avoid nasty surprises especially with insurance (I've recently been charged a horrific amount when I notified a forum-favourite insurer that I'd had an RS Tuner remap) but now that you've got a fair bit of advice you might be best of waiting to see what they say, rather than worrying over nothing?

You'll be fine. I had a tt a few years back and got rear ended by a people carrier. Car went in to be repaired and I got a phone call a few days later from Admiral. They told me they wouldn't replace the exhaust because it was aftermarket and I hadn't declared it. I told them that unfortunately I wasn't an expert on Audi exhausts (this one genuinely looked standard and was on the car when I bought it) so how was I supposed to know it had an aftermarket one. They paid out.

You will be fine, crashed a modified car years ago and hadn't declared any of the mods, had to pay the extra premium to cover the mods and they fixed the car.

This is exactly what it seems. The insurance company isn't stupid.

It would appear your mum has insured her car then decided to modify her car by adding alloy wheels.
Also on your mothers policy it would appear that the named driver (read less frequent user, less likely to be in the car, less chance of being in an accident) has actually had an accident. You have also mentioned on a public forum that you were planning on taking out your own policy, therefore you own the car, you are the main driver. You are fronting.
Either way you have shafted your mum for the next 5 years whether they pay out or not. I hope she loves you!

My mum was the main user i was only using this car on weekends as my mum was using it for work. I was going to take a policy out in my name so u could also use it for work as she is also insured on another family car
