Won't start - help!

Hi guys, ok these are the symptons. It's a Clio 03 Dynamique 1.6i
1) Battery was totally dead (had left it for a while) so charged it up with a battery charger from halfrauds.
2) Once put battery back in, lights came on and stuff so it was holding the charge + it's a fairly new battery
3) turned key in ignition and the engine makes this stuttering sound as if it's trying to fire up, but nothing ever happens.

I was thinking possibly starter motor? I tried putting it into reverse taking off the handbrake and rocking it to see if it had got caught up. But it made no difference, anyone have any ideas?? Thanks lads.

Was the starter kicking in?

Did the car lurch back when you tried starting it in reverse? if not then the starter isnt engaging

No it didn't lurch back. You think it's the starter motor too?

that other thread wa s alittle complicated...i'm fairly sure it's not the same thing. Although it migh be useful to know where the fuel cut off switch is... any idea?
