word processor for mac

what are the choices? are there any free ones?

I only need it to write a letter over the next few weeks.

NeoOffice/OpenOffice. Both free. There's Office 2008 for Mac if you want to stick with Word etc, but it's not free.

Check the apple website. They often offer downloads of pages for 30 day free trial.

i have both iworks and office, and office is a lot better!

Pages (iworks version of word) is ok but i find office to have a better feel to it!

Since formatting and reinstalling i have not bothered with iworks!

iWork pwns Office, but Office has it's uses.
