Worlds worst mechanic.... goes to me :(

Save the flaming (although i deserve it) as im p*ssed off with myself enough

doing a cambelt on my car (i would say i have a very good level of mechanical skill) all going ok,
time to put the new belt on.... the cam pulley slips, a quick phonecall to fred (Awesome guy!) got me on the right track. engine was turning fine by hand, perfect in fact. so i went to start it properly and turns out i didnt bolt the tensioner up correctly. now the car is at the end of the drive in bits as im honesty f*cked off.

guesses to what damage its done??
ive retimed it and it turns over both manually fine and by key it just turns over it wont start

dan

ive checked it yea, lines on the belt mark up with the lines on the pulleys im giving myself some time out for a an hour to cool my head to think will check again then. its a 1.2 16v d4f if it matters

it started when the tensioner was not bolted correclty and started making a noise so i cut the engine, after i adjusted the belt (didnt even look if it was out of time just took it off) it wouldnt start, the engine just turns over no sign of it catching to start though,

sprayshack its a easy job just double check like i didnt.

So it started, you could hear the tensioner rattling it's tits off and stopped the car and all you had to do was tighten the tensioner as the timing was still ok?

With the tensioner loose I can't see how the timing wouldn't be out.

the tensioner when all the way to the end of its bolt, everything plugged in, the only thing i unplugged is the small black pipe going from the inlet manifold to the driver side headlight area as it was in my way

anyone know where to look for a complete head? of valves slightly cheaper than £15 each :( tried ebay theres a few there but for a different engine subcode

Mate look at it this way, you learn from your mistakes so next time you won't make it again.....and if you do, then you are a s**t mechanic Lol

lol true dunn, when i say mechanic im not actually qualified (awaits the you shouldnt have touched it club) i just learn from doing, and as youve said i have learnt from what ive done.
scrooge i havent yet just need to get them funny star (not torx) sockets and i can get the inlet off. this is all new territory for me now so any guides to help me will be appreciated if not ill just attack all the bolts that are in my way to get the head off.

Mate, we all make mistakes just learn from them! I've bent valves before thru not thinking and I've even had to re-code a UCH after accidentally tapping "Erase Config" on the tablet screen! Times like this you just have to walk away for a few minutes then come back and get stuck in as everything is fixable. At the end of the day its a very easy engine to work on and parts are fairly cheap in comparison to other engines. Unless you drop lucky no decent scrap yard will break a good engine for a cylinder head and if they will expect to pay £150-200 which isn't gonna be much less than an engineering shop will charge you to rebuild your existing head.Mick

thanks mick, im looking at valves atm as a first thought before looking
wondering if you can help?
my mate has a d4f 712 and ive got a d4f 722 can i swap heads and valves with his?

Ive rung around loads of people many off here so sorry if ive caught you at a awkward time  just doing my homework now to see what the best way for me to go is, heres a pic of it in its "grave"

Oh bungee cord on the crane isnt actually being used to lift, its just stopping the bonnet from flapping in the wind

Update today
Got the head off today and the valves are fooked pretty much now shopping around for bits, I have a head ready off my mate going to pull the rest of the block out of the car and do the clutch while I'm at it I think.

Was still a bit down today because of it all so I cheered myself up with a new halfords professional range socket set :)
