As above, the panel your claying should be wet enough for the clay to basically glide over the paintwork.
Don't drop the clay, if you do then bin it.
Typically you need to split the clay into 3 pieces as well.
Darren S had the worse experience with clay that I've seen but he's removed the pictures

Hayley you turning into a cleaning geek 
As long as your sensible all will be fine - bear in mind that by stripping off any products may make your car look worse than before you started anyway before you re polish and wax.
Most of the things have been covered, make sure you use plenty of detailing spray or soapy water. They clay should glide easily, you should only need enough pressure to make sure the clay can glide easily over the paint, no need to apply pressure.
Keep kneading folding the clay to give a clean face, pick any big bits of crap it picks up out of it, if it looks tired can wont fold clean, change for a new piece, cutting the bar into pieces is a must.
As it is nice an warm at the moment you should not have problems with the clay being to hard, if you do it on a chilly day make sure the clay is soft warm and pliable. Should be soft like Blutack.

How anyone can mess claying up is beyond me.. I managed it okay I reckon
Hardest part was the fact the sun was on one side of my car so it was hard to keep the panel wet & the clay stuck a couple of times but other than that I reckon it was a fair 1st time effort.. Was rather impressed with myself!
Washed the car 1st, clayed it, washed it again, then dried it off, gave it a quick going over with AG SRP and then Aqua Wax.
Wheels still won't come clean, which really spoils it
