Worth the risk?

  Golf 7.5R & Clio 200
Looking to shift my 200 at some point this year probably. Love the car but its expensive on fuel and Im just too worried about it when I leave it parked on the street/car park. Want something similar in fun etc but less expensive and better on fuel.

So naturally, 182 seems a high contender. Now, Im in no rush at all, and would wait for the right car. Question is, if you're looking at a car around £2500 ish in value, and the belts aren't done, would you bother? Or run until it goes pop and drop an engine in it/flog it?

Just after opinions on what you lot would do.

Cambelt £500 - New engine similar costs- personally I would go for a car with belts done or ones due that can be done.
My phase 1 ticks all the right boxes ;)

Would you really want to be driving a car with an engine that could potentially go pop at any point?

Personally, I'd buy one cheap/with belts due and get them done yourself. That way you can get it done properly by a specialist on here.

P.S. get a Trophy!

Why risk it? For your budget a 172 with the belts done and some nice extras would be my bet. At 2.5k a 182's going to be poor IMO.

If a belt snaps, and you decide to replace the engine....

£250 for a second hand engine. (You will have NO idea where it's come from or how many miles it's done!)

£500 for a new belt kit and dephaser whilst it's out.

£150 for a new clutch.

£xxx to remove the engine and fit the new one.

Madness ton to do it unless the car is worth less than a grand. IMO of course.

Fair points - Think I'll sell mine before I buy, can share my girlfriends car for a bit whilst searching. As said though, no rush. Thanks or your input all

I was in the exact same position as you. Scared of leaving it anywhere, fearing it would get dented and scratched. Expensive on fuel no matter how driven.

Looking to return to a 182 at some point in the near further, just because its good value for money fun.

it up to you of course but 3 years ago I got mine and the belts were not done so I made this my first job and the car has been perfect to me!
