Would a leaking inlet manifold gasket cause idle to go mad ?

Does anyone know if a leaking inlet manifold gasket would cause the idle on my car to go all over the place ?

As my car is in at the stealers at the moment as the idle is all over the place :( and they say thats the problem.

Shooting up to 3000 rpm and done to 1000rpm etc etc and sticking at certain revs.

See here; http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=309437&page=4

They came out with it was the acoustic valve at first as the problem http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=311473, now its the inlet manifold gasket.

What do you's guys think ?

  a thirsty one
as above yeash it will, its air entering the engine thats not been measured by the air flow meter, i think i heard it called "dead air" once but thats prob just a local mechanic saying.

*UPDATE*

I still have my old manifold gasket where the upper plenum (manifold with Renaultsport) joins the lower manifold (one with injectors).

They said that was the problem of my dodgy idle.

So why haven't they replaced it ?

The service manager said the mechanic had taken the upper inlet manifold (The Renault sport one) off and cleaned the sealing area and refitted it.

Would this be true ?

As the gasket aint been changed and i've been charged 2 hours labour (£130) for nothing that i can see.

What do you guys think they've done work wise ?

As my idle has returned to normal.

I thought that the gasket would have to be replaced if the manifold had been removed :S
Or will you get away with using it again being a metal one ?
