Xbox 360 additional USB Hard drive

Basically i've found out that you can put all your music/films/photo's etc onto an external hard drive and plug in via the usb port on back of the 360.

Looking at getting a Western Digital "My Book" 500gb HD for this as there about 120 quid at the mo, just want to know whether you can make playlists or play albums all together etc through this or will it only keep looping the selected track, because from what i've read it creates basically a windows explorer page of the external drive.

Also would like to know if anyone else has done this and there views on it

Have you not got a media center edition XP pc? could leave the hard drive on that and use it as a media centre wired or wireless.

not sure how the xbox reads a hard drive but obviously with media centre everything is catalogued for you.

No haven't got Media Centre edition, have XP with media player 11 that does let me stream media to my xbox, although it's all wireless and i want a hard wired connection, also it means i dont need to leave my computer on.
