Xbox - Can't connect controller?

I got my Xbox back today from sending it off after I got the 'Red Rings Of Death'

Since getting it back though I haven't been able to re-connect the controller! :S

I can use my controller to switch the console on, but when I press the 'connect' buttons on both controller and console they don't synchronize!

Am I being a div, or is there something the matter??

I didn't plug the HDMI cable in.
