Xenons - AGAIN!

ok....so i managed to get hold of some 'Philips D2S' bulbs rather than the Osram ones i had in from when i got the xenons, which would hopefully give the same effect as the 182's as in the lens appearing purple instead of a creamy color....

i was hoping the different bulbs was the reason, but now have had both types of bulbs in and they look exactly the same....

what other factors effect the appearance of the lens?

projector beam/ball type thing. Tbh the ones on my 182 are only really purple on strike up, then they warm up. You can see the purple haze on roadsigns though.

yeah i have the purple startup, and haze on signs/other cars....

all the 182's at the meet tonight were purple all the time....like chris's 182, no idea what it is

Once they warm up there pretty much the same as the 172 ones.


I have noticed that the projector unit in the 182 lamps are slightly more purple/white.

This is down to lamp design rather then bulbs. The Osram/Philips bulbs are identical in spec and colour temp.

Could be that they arent adjusted..... remember the 172/182's are continually self adjusting off the rear beam. (yours wont be) Probably that.

car is lowered alot too...but if i bend right down you can see a zone of purple then it goes back white again....as has said must just be the design!

i got a new 172 unit and i get a purple line thing at the top of the beam

but on my 2nd hand 1 its just plain

looks odd 2 dif colour xenons :rasp:

If you want a more purple tinge then get 6000k bulbs rather than the standard 4300k's there much more a bluey/purple colour.

yeah karl mine have the purple tinge at the edges, just not the lens..... cheers bmh il try it.

I noticed this aswell, my friend told me one looks brighter than the other so I told him to drive my car about whilst I looked at them and you could see one was kind of purple and the other was just cream.... Where abouts sells the right 6000k xenon bulbs?

They are.

172 units and 182 units have a different make of projector in them.
Probably down to the type of glass used or a slight difference in internal colour.

This will be enough to change the colour produced very slightly.


I really wouldnt worry about it !

At a distance they ALL look the same.

Mine are the 182 units and are not quite as purple as my mates 172, one also looked brighter than the other from a distance but when i had them height adjusted at MOT they were all 100% the same..

TBH the xenons on my mates R26 aren't even as purple looking as yours.
