basically i had a dud version of XP pro on my comp and now windows have found out n said im running corrupt version, they say ive got to buy a genuine key off them for £92. anything i can do or am i just gonna have to stump up the coin?

back up the computer now onto cd's. Re-format with a genuine version of XP...

Maybe try another version of windows, but it sounds like you have been updating windows which has allowed this. You can find windows license numbers on computers in work...i suspect these have not been registered...you could use one of them..

I would watch what you update in future then!

I would hardly call having to spend £90+ an 'advantage' though, and the tool to 'help you obtain a licensed copy' sounds extremely patronising as I'm sure most of the people without licenses are more than aware!

Not that it bothers me, I'm running a genuine copy that came with my PC!

Quick warning - a friend of mine has this "you are using an illegal version of Windows" pop up on his machine after doing some windows updates... a week later - nudda. Windows won't even boot up. Not sure how 100% accurate it is but you've been warned!

I had that a few weeks back and it is still working perfectly. I have used the same verion (legit) on two PCs. One didn't like it. If you leave the updates set on automatic the PC still works and downloads updates too.

If you decide to buy a new one, post up how it works on here! 90 pounds is not half bad for a new version of XP pro.

I have the steps needed to change a Windows Product code if you have a genuine version of XP to hand and are wanting to upgrade them both to legit.

I have windows XP serial changer program , always worked for me . Just don't download the update "The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool " when it asks you , what genuine advantage , lol

Corp doesnt require Activation.

And unless the key has been abused it will update as well.

cheers guys, yea i had automatic updates ticked. think this is likely to be the case for them finding out?

i did try and buy the code off them but they only accepted visa, mastercard and american EX, i got meastro n it didnt like it so f**ked it off for now.
