Was going downhill on a dual carriageway this morning, i put my foot down, and @ about 4500 revs something happened, a noise from the front right of the vehicle developed. I dipped the clutch immediately and coasted to a layby. As i was coasting down the hill there was a consistent tap which was linked to the wheel reveloutions not engine revs.

Once stopped with the engine still idling the noise had gone, however there was a faint smell of burnt rubber. I switched off the engine and proceeded to look round the car, i thought it may have even been a puncture which it was not. I looked under the engine bay and everything loooks fine, from what i can see.

I then started the engine and steadily drove the next 500m to work, lucky i was quite near. It all seems fine again.

I am worried that it may be the auxilary belt which has snapped and got caught on the driveshaft as i was coasting down the hill. Likely or not? How can i tell if this is the case? If not, what else could it be?

The vehicle is now in my work car park, its about a 50 mile drive home tonight, i dont know what to do? If i can elimanate that its not belt related i will drive it home, if it is belt related i will get it collected and dropped off at a garage?

full lock, drivers side wheel, pull the arch liner off the support bar and have a poke around at the belt

Okay, so ive taken the wheel off and removed the arch lining but can't see alot, i can definately see one belt which i presume and am hoping is the cambelt. See pictures below, however when taking off the lining noticed what appears to be high velocity belt whipping damage is the only way to describe it on the plastic lining itself which is under the belt area. I havent started the engine sinse this morning, i am guessing that the the aux belt has gone, if so can i drive without this?

  Clio 172 Ph1.
if the aux belt has gone you would get some flashing lights (battery + stop), because the generator wouldnt charge anymore.
The belt you can se is the the aux belt (im pretty sure)

Thanks Fred, okay so the belt i pictured is the aux belt, yes? So is there only two belts? the aux and the cambelt? Do you get what i mean about the arch lining, something did make a horrible noise this morning....
