Who has got their Wii then..........?

Yeps, the N64 stick was the first of its kind, which is what made Goldeneye so playable. Until of course the joystick disintegrated with overuse :)

A couple of consoles back in the early 80's had an analogue stick on the control pad.

Back in the day when games were not advanced enough to use one? Are you sure you're not mistaking a joystick for an analogue stick??

Well you can argue about whether it has to be thumb or hand controlled but there were consoles with an analogue stick on a hand held pad with a number of buttons on it so for me that is an analogue pad and not a PC style analogue joystick. Nintendo just made the stick a bit smaller.

Check out Atari 5200. There are no buttons on the stick but on the pad the stick is attached to so for me that is good enough. Otherwise you are just splitting hairs!

It is simple! Other consoles 15 years earlier had an analogue joypad! They may not look like pads of today but they essentially consist of a handheld pad with buttons and an analogue stick that does not have buttons on it - i.e. they are "joypads" and not flight sim style "joysticks". They allowed proportional control of games as opposed to a digital on/off. Doesn't matter whether they were flashy 3D games or not the concept existed years ago.

So it wasn't a Nintendo invention although no doubt Nintendo's fanboys will always come out with some lame excuse or get-out clause!

In fact Sony (the company that usually rips things off of others) should take the real credit for inventing the dual analogue pad which has now become the standard.

The N64 three prong design was daft and over complicated as the sensible option was to mount the D pad just below one of the sticks. Hence why Nintendo copied Sony's idea for the Cube.

Anyway I can hear the sound of the Wii downstairs having been set up in the living room so I will go down and make another attempt at getting on with it. Expect I will be back up stairs on Rainbow Six with in 10 minutes though!

Toypop, I do not think those sticks were anaolgue. They were simply joysticks were they not? With microswitches?

Fair play. That's new to me :) I don't think it changes the fact that Nintendo were the first t actually make proper use of the stick though?

Erm...actually, reading that, I still don't see anything that says that analogue sticks were around in the 80s...

An analog joystick is a joystick which has continuous states, i.e. returns an angle measure of the movement in any direction in the plane or the space (usually utilizing potentiometers) and a digital joystick gives only on/off signals for four different directions, and mechanically possible combinations (such as up-right, down-left, &c.). (Digital joysticks were very common as game controllers for the video game consoles, arcade machines, and home computers of the 1980s.)

Look up Atari 5200 as I said earlier! Its on Wiki.

Anyway we have it set up on the widescreen CRT downstairs and it looks miles better. It is amazing how dump it looks on a HD TFT with the standard lead but the colours are back to normal on the old TV!

Bowling and Golf were ace. :approve:

Bowling is great as a standalone game. Real shame that Golf only has 9 holes.

Now if Tiger Woods came out and used the same controls it would be amazing!!!!

But it would be even more amazing on 360 and playing Live with headsets etc...

Wonder if a similar controller will ever come out on 360? Shame it is wasted on a less powerful console. Why can't we have the control and the good graphics at the same time :(

the funny thing is the first i ever herd of them was about 3 days ago on a tv advert! lol i never herd about it at all! lol any1 else?

I like being proved wrong - it makes me stronger :)

Although, while apparently that analogue stick was pretty poor, it did indeed exist. I'm unsure how it was used to any effect in games though. Certainly, when the N64 stick was released, it was marketed as being a first for a home console IIRC. Technically speaking it seems that was a falsehood. No further questions.

However, I don't think anyone would argue that Nintendo made amazing use of thr stick on their N64 controller before the likes of Sony? Mario 64 and GE are legends, and Mario in particular made the anaologue stick essential - like "how did we ever do without it?" Wave Race time trials with mates after the pub 'til 4am? That stick was amazing :approve:

  SLK 350
Wave Race used to drive me mental, spend like 5 minutes doing a trial only to miss the easiest of ramps at which point you knew you'd lost lol.

Glad your further play test gave you a better opinion of it Toypop ;)

Wave Race time trials were insane. When we reached the stage that taking the perfect racing line just didn't cut it, we then got into balancing, leaning forward to minimse air time over crests etc. just to shave off another hundredth and beat my best mates ghost by an inch.

I've never had so much fun with a console before or since :approve:

Wave race :approve::approve:

I've just been playing on my mates Wii all weekend (as mine hasnt turned up yet :() And its amazing! When youre playing, the graphics dont even come into your mind, even though I think they are pretty damn good, its just so much fun. And who ever says they are N64 graphics needs to go back and play their 64 and check!

ukaskew, how is Monkey ball?

My bro pre-ordered two. Both were accepted but I told him I didnt want mine so he cancelled it - and boy am I glad.

His arrived today. Firstly the signal quality from the boxed composite cable is sh*t. We played FZERO on it and it looks worse than when we plug the SNES into the TV!!!

Wii sports is very simplistic, almost like a collection of Atari 2600 games. Haven't played Zelda yet because my bro ain't bothering now until he gets the HD cable from ebay for £60 and I dont blame him as it looks like an N64 at the moment.

The motion controls are ok. Not as intuitive as most Nintendo ideas. I found it frustrating as it wasn't doing what I expected it to do. It was as though sometimes it didn't matter how you swung it the same shot (in tennis) would be played.

When aiming at the menus it doesn't aim like a gun. If you aim the remote like a gun the pointer is a few inches below. Dunno what will happen with gun games but I wouldn't be able to play it like that.

It is a real crying shame that Nintendo didn't just release the controller and games on the 360. Tiger Woods golf would be great on Xbox 360 using the motion controls. As it is you have gamecube quality (if you buy a 60 quid cable from ebay) or N64 quality combined with simplistic games.

Hopefully things will get better.
Oh Dear, at last a proper review from someone who isn't a nintendo fanboy, ozzy will no doubt argue it but i am glad i didn't join the hype and go for one now, sounds just like what I thought it would be like, all hype and nowhere near as good as the 360!

Oh and before you ask, I am a Sony Fanboy.

I love the Wii, been rinsing it HARD all weekend. MY arm aches from being pissed up and trying to play baseball LOL. All good fun.

Am loving Redsteel and Monkey Ball. Going to give Zelda a crack tonight.

I am not a fanboy hence owning a 360, Wii, Gaming PC and PS3.

But the Wii is going to get USED a lot

The 360 IMO at the moment smokes the PS3, probs due to the massive catalogue of games and mainly GOW, sure this will even out or change once the PS3 gets into its stride, but the PS3 has the Blu-Ray which is what I mainly wanted it for.

360 I love for the multi player element, nice selection of games and the control pad and the uber cheap way of playing HD films

Wii is just ground breaking IMO. Totally changes the whole concept of how games should be played, as long as you arent a girly weakling or a lazy fatty who doesnt want to move when you play games I fail to see how you cant love it. Can only get better

I say it again though you have to admit it would be better if the controller was released for the 360 or PS3.

Ignoring the control method it is a crappy previous gen console!

I was arguing with my brother today because he was still ranting on about choosing between originality and graphics. I pointed out that it is 2006 and we are paying enough money for all this sh*t and yet we still don't get both.

I am not sure a weak console can survive purely on the basis of its controller. If MS or Sony work out a way to rip off the concept without breaking a patent law then Nintendo are finished....

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S
Both isn't commercially possible.

It would cost twice as much, it would be three times teh size and it would be up against the xbox and ps3, both of which are entertainment machines, not games consoles, which is what the Wii is.

Maybe next gen what your after will be possible!

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S
would hate to be wherever you are atm then!

Toypop and myself have both just expressed opinions.. not bullshit.

  Yaris Hybrid
To be honest it is like Perodua inventing a new cheap 1.3 litre engine with 1000bhp and getting a patent on it so that the only way you can have it is in a Nippa.

360 and PS3 owners are like the Ferrari and Porsche owners sat there thinking "what a f*cking waste of a good idea".

As an £80 add-on for a 360 or PS3 it would be great. I just wish Nintendo would sign some kind of deal with MS or Sony so that they could release their controllers and games on a proper console but keep a decent chunk of the revenue. We all know that the proper consoles will outsell the Wii and have all the best games. It is just so frustrating.

  SLK 350
And you just sound like someone who can't appreciate innovation at a budget price, I really fail to see how the Wii can be classed as a waste - It's nothing of the sort.

Wait until thw back catalogue of games grows, and developers find ways to improve the control system even more.

If it isn't your thing, great...but you cannot simply quantify it as a waste.

  Yaris Hybrid
E.g. Golf is great but as I said wouldn't it be better if Tiger Woods had that control scheme.

So Ok EA release Tiger Woods 07 on the Wii.

Fine but I have the money yet I am stuck playing Tiger Woods with gamecube graphics using the remote and Tiger Woods with next gen graphics on 360 with a pad.

I am paying the money, why can't I have both!

Ok so you say it is about a BUDGET price. Right then, if Nintendo are that confident they should licence the remote for the 360. Then those on a budget can buy a Wii and those with more money get the pad for their 360. That way Nintendo still sell as many Wii's to poor people but they can also blag more money out of richer people that have 360's and PS3's.

Hmmmmmm now I wonder why they won't do that. Why wouldn't Nintendo want to earn even more money?!

Because we all know what would really happen which proves that budget doesn't come into it. Hence why the Cube flopped.

  Revels Mum & Sister
Toypop whines too much ;)

if you were that bothered about comprimising surely you wouldnt have bought a Clio?

your arguing over a games console! if someone likes the 360 then who cares if someone likes the wii then who cares! god!!! id rather be havin a w**k than arguin about a games console.

I love my wii!!

I hate 360's, they are the anti-console.

How anyone can slate a PS3 (other than lee who may have more knowledge of what one MIGHT be like) before if even goes on sale in europe is beyond me. It too has motion control.

Taking a day off from the Wii tomorrow (ok, that's the plan, probably not though), my arm aches like crazy.

I stupidly went for a marathon effort of trying to get gold on the Wii Sports Baseball Home Run training game. So far I've got 7 home runs totalling 1050 yards, no gold yet though!

Had to break it up with games of Tanks on Wii Play (which I absolutely love), up to about 65 tanks destroyed on that.

Looking at the stats I've notched up 10 hours on Wii Sports already, not bad for a free game.

i've spent many an hour this weekend playing wii sports on my bro's wii.

the majority of the time was spent on wii bowling. totally aweosme. we played it with 3 players all last night and all this afternoon.

really cool game, but remember it is only there to showcase the new controller and not the graphics.

the next few months willbe great for the wii to see what it can do.

but remember it took quite a while for the real good games for the xbox360 to emerge so give the wii time to bring out the most aweome gamplay you have ever seen!

best score on wii bowling: 216 this sunday afternoon. 4 strikes in a row helped a great deal! :) lol!

Played a wii at the weekend and i sooo wanna get one now

Its funny, doesn't matter how advanced game consoles (or entertainment machines as some of you wanna call it) get, i still have more fun on all the old skool consoles

such as excite bike on the NES, legendary game :)

  RIP Dan
Great thread, all the different opinons have helped me decide to buy a Wii.

Next year of course as i am not paying £300+ on ebay.

Cant wait, that sword game looks good.

Seb, maybe they will bring out a cop game where you can use the control to leather suspects.....will be good practice without the cracked skulls and akward questions? ;-)

  RIP Dan
that did make me p1ss myself.

i hadnt played gta until a few weeks ago...i know!! It annoyed me until i realised i could punch random people, hookers and that and nick their dough. its all i did for hours, sod p1ssing about and doing the game stuff.

dont think anything like that will be on the Wii.....shame.
