Supercharge the 182 or get something else?

I don't know, I've not looked into the power to weight ratios but I would say there would not be much in them tbh.

Edit looking into them:

P1 P2W @ 350bhp 270bhp per tonne (Really not sure about torque I guess it would be at least 300 ft lb)

172 with 270bhp = 247bhp per tonne (Don't know much about the torque)

I don't think there'd be much in them. I'd have the P1 if I was spending 9k.

Supercharged power for ya! ;)

and like i said....add into that the 25% min loss thru the transmission..............the charged clio would rape it.

Boosted Clio's are VERY quick. Those who haven't driven or owned one won't believe some of the machinery they can keep up with or even beat in a straight line, while still being epic fun to drive around corners.

my mate had a tweeked ra spec scoob years ago, was supposedly running 300+ bhp.

the track car had the bodies on then , not overly impressive imho, and it used to rip him a new arsehole.

the boosted clio would have done the same to the bodied track car. no question.

I don't understand the point of this thread you've already decided IMHO what your gonna do so why not just do it?

Every person on here myself included has made valid points but as I say you've already made up your mind.

However, here's another slant for you were currently in a recession so why not spend that money on a deposit for a house................

The property market will pick up and if you sold that place you'd be able to get something far better than a boosted Clio.

;)

I had never made up my mind when I started it, I was considering both options, but swaying to the SC route.

It's just as the thread has gone on, Im swaying more towards it even more. Im still not 100% yet, and Im still listening to the options people are giving.

  Italian 3.2 V6
look into an mazda3 MPS, nothing comes close for value for money.. easly tunable to 320bhp from 256bhp (standard) thats what you call a sleeper! EASLY in the top 3 quickest hot hacthes! (8.2 seconds from 60-100mph, the 182 is 10 or 11 seconds...)

look a tad dull but have huge potential!

either that or as said, 225 f1 , FRS (mk1, ph2), DC5, EP3 JDM.. the list goes on..

The thing you have to think about is what do you want? Do you want to spend 10k in total on a clio? Or would you rather have a bigger/nicer car with alot more potential?

I used to have a fiat punto GT turbo, must of spent about 10k on it, stupidly fast with 240bhp, but it was still a punto. Do i regret it, YES! I could be driving around in a nice new 200 now, or a nice Evo or something.

Its down to what you want. You will get mixed reviews on here.

As already said, now is the time to buy a house, again something i wish i would of done!

You learn buy your mistakes, ill be moving on to something bigger next,

E.G, my mate used to mod puntos, he sold up, bought an EVO 8, which now has about 400bhp, for the same money he spent getting 240bhp from a punto.

Yes the clio will be rapid, yes itll be fun, but there is an end to everything, and i think spending 4k to get 250bhp is abit excessive. Ive spent 10k on the punto, and about 8k on the clio. 18K FFS!

Think about it.

Your call....

Hmm, been thinking about this a bit today. Im gonna change my advice.

+ points

- Your still young and will only be once (I blew a ton of money on cars over the years and wouldnt change if i had my time again)

- A S/C Clio would be very quick and would still cost shirt buttons in track running costs compaired to a Scooby or the like (Tyres/brakes etc)

- It would still look like a normal 182

- I could have a go

- Points

- It wont be £4k, you will end up spending a lot more, you will want coilovers next and evenually a standalone management system

- You cant drive a stock powered one properly so how would you manage? (Kemble);)

-

Jay you cheeky git lol!

I pissed myself at the last comment!

Your second + point is what keeps attracting me to it. Another car will cost millions to run on track, which is something I will want to do a lot.

Granted I know I will eventually have to get some coilies, and being in your car at Bedford I know I would want to do it properly, which aint cheap!

And as you say, Im still young. I may be spunking money away, but at least it's on something pretty awesome, and not some piece of s**t on the cover of max power!

+1

Except, id say make sure you're getting 100% of your current setup 1st. So get tuition.
driving tuition is a very good point, its all well and good having a fast car, but pretty useless if you cant drive it to its full potential

Also the driving skills you pick up will be with you for life, and be a long term investment for you :)

Its your money at the end of the day though, but be aware boost gets addictive, and before long you will want more, then look at the costs of getting more than 240-250 bhp, realise its a waste of money then probably sell your car for 6.5-7k, realistically losing 2k, thats if you dont have any problems along the way

As said it depends what you're after mate. Scoobies and Evos will hit you hard in the pocket as standard, so modded will be hard work.

SC clio would be wicked, but you have to think about potential harm causes to the standard block. I'd be tempted by it, but would want to get the bottom end forged just in case you want to up the power down the line somewhere. GB I'd buy a spare just in case, but you never know with clios. One will handle the power fine, the other might not. I love my car, wouldn't ever sell it, but it depends on how much love you have for a clio.

Yeah you could save for a house, which I agree would be the best thing to do really. (100% mortgages suck believe me). I suppose it depends on how much disposable income you have on a regular basis. Regardless if you buy a different car or not you'll never see the 4K again, so SC for me is the best option.

Just wait and get a better car later.

Faster isn't always better.

There's a street KA round here with a focus RS engine in it. Its fair rapid but i'll always be a faggot wagon worth 4k no matter how many more ££££ he ploughs into it.

People always so 'well its the fun of driving a modified car' and tbh it isn't. I spent £1500 getting my old MX-5 turbo to 240bhp. It was fun but no more fun than my mates E36 M3 3.0. I was lucky with the MX-5 as i bought it very cheap so i managed to make my money back on it.

But 99/100 modifiying a car majorly = burning money.

Yes it might but fun/stressful/rewarding. Then again burning £5k with a flame thrower would be fun/stressful/rewarding and you wouldn't do that would you.

So why not forget the SC idea and get some proper coilovers and do a track day every month?

I think it comes down to how well my review goes. If it goes ok then I think i'll do that (ie. just the suspension).

If it goes really well, then I think I'll probably say fuk it and get the SC kit.

Im young with a bit of disposable income, so why not?! I'm sure I'll have time to get a faster more sensible car later in life, so I think I'll probably do something mad/fun whilst Im young.

Sorry Dan I wasn't having a go yesterday its just I've thought long and hard about this and am very happy to just set my car up properly and do as many trackdays as possible.

However mate as you say life is too short and I did exactly the same thing when I said f**k you to everybody and I bought my Integrale and although it raped my wallet nearly every month I loved that car so damn much.

Mate if it makes you happy go for it and as a wise man once said we're not here for a long time so lets have a good time.

:)

^ lol, no worries mate. It's a big decision, and Im glad some people are trying to bring me back down to earth!

But as you said, most people have spent a fortune when they're young, I think this will be my go at it ;)

Trust me mate the day I picked up my Integrale was one of the best days of my life up there with going to Spa and the Ring in the Trophy.

  182cup & 172 racecar
Dan just do it,I would hate to even think about how much money I have spent on cars over the years. But to put things in perspective, many years ago when I was Rallying I could have bought a brand new house for £9,995 £500 deposit, but what did I do? spent £2000 on a engine rebuild for the Escort.
Did I ever regret it,sometimes yes when houses shot up in price I thought f**k what have I done.
But then again I had such a fantastic time out competing and having fun I wouldn't change anything at all.
Better to say you have done something and had fun than wish you had done it.
I do not regret a thing, trouble is I have started all over again now so double the fun.

I weighed this up when I got mine SC'd. I still went for it! Sooooo much fun!

Although I do sometimes look at focus RS mk1's and think "hmmmm did I do the right thing?"

yep..........u did mate.

its still a Fix Or Repair Daily at the end of the day. and somethings thats supposed to be pretty quick. whereas the clios just a shopping trolley

i know how much my minis used to piss off my Fix Or Repair Daily fan mates back in the day, xr 2/3/is and the odd rs tub all succumbed to the minis chuckability and very very surprising straight line speed. they even went on to the astras to get the better of them, which they finally succeeded lol

its all about the fun factor.......and tbh....it takes a lot to beat a mini for fun.

Another way to look at it is if you said you where upgrading to a 197 at a cost of an extra 4-5K then people would say nice car, good choice.. etc.

IMO opinion a SC 182 is a far superior car to a 197. The 182's are still relitavely new and have a good interior etc so its not like your just running a very fast shed. Best of all worlds imo. If I was to SC a Clio i'd be looking to do it to either a very very late 172 cup, 182 or trophy.

  Turbos.
I wouldn't do it, too often you see cars with major mods just being completed then a month later it's up for sale! Guilty of it myself, once you've gotten bored of a car, there's no real going back...

Open up your horizons, there is more out there than Clios! Or even cars for that matter.

Supercharger is only worth it if your committed to keeping the car long term. If not then you'll get raped on the resale value.

I can guarantee that I wouldn't sell it. I'm far from bored with the car is it is, so with 80+ bhp extra I don't think that will change!

It will & the cynic in me awaits the 'for sale' thread.

Sorry, but I'm old, been there, done that, watched others do it & got the t-shirt.

Trust me. Just buy something faster. A 250bhp clio is still a clio, its still only a challenge up to point & you will get bored of it. Fact.

peolpe loose alot more on brand new cars, having less fun. Atleast with the SC youll love it too bits and know u have a clio that stands out. If u did sell it people on here wud snap it up. Id for one wud buy one today as a 2nd car if there was one on the market

No i haven't, but id hazard a guess and say that its still a very accomplished & predictable FWD car, just with extra wheelspin & power?

Or does the £4k include a conversion to RWD?

lol.no mate it doesnt convert it to RWD. but it also doesnt mean extra wheelspin. i take it you dont like FWD then?? predictable...not really, understeer....takes a deft right foot to steer it on the throttle as much as it does with RWD
