Harnesses etc in a 182 - yes/no

  Clio 182

I really want harnesses in my 182 - the normal seatbelts just dont feel as safe etc now. However, I understand to have harnesses, I need to have buckets and have to lose my rear seats etc and no one seems to do this to the 182, only the Cup - so is it a real no no to do this to a 182?

you dont need to have buckets nor do you have to remove the rear seats its just that its easier that way plus most people tend to do both.

Do you need your airbags?
No, Id be better off without the front airbags as Im short, hence its probably more dangerous to have them.

the issue with putting buckets in is that the wiring relating to the side airbags in the seat and the pretentioners for the seatbelts ends up disconnected so the airbag light comes up. you can get round this by putting a resistor into the system to make the control unit thinks the airbags and pretentioner is still there .

Ideally, Id prefer to keep the standard seats as most buckets are so low for me unless I can find something suitable.

So how do the harnesses fix if you keep the rear seats?

Same place as with seats, the rear seatbelt points.

Will you invalidate your warranty and insurance?
I dont know? Insurance I presume would be ok if all things declared?

As for warranty, anyone know??

It will invalidate any warrenty on the parts that you may need to move to install the harnesses (such as rear seat belts). Might effect warrenty on your seats as well!

You can run harnesses with the normal front seats without I problem, I did this for a long while before I got my buckets in finally - no worries at all, just need to remove the rear seat bases as you have then got access to bolt points needed for the harnesses (oh and remove the silly rear brace bar thing)

as for saying buckets are too low they are only as low as you set them alot of companies supply subframes or mounts that have several sets of holes so you can mount them at different heights

As long as it doesnt affect the warranty on any unrelated part, Id be happy.

Sorry for sounding naive here, but can you still use the rear seats?

Plus I have no idea what the rear brace bar thing is, but I wont worry about that for now...

Ah right, didnt know that. Although once mounted I presume they are stuck at that height...?

The seats that McShug had didnt seem overly low but they were more padded it seemed?

You could just roll the seat bases forwards rather than removing them so you could have use of your rear seats, you would however have to revert to standard seatbelts when you have people in the back!

well stuck until you unbolt them and reset at a different height. hugh has recliners in his car not buckets, they are basically a more supportive version of what is in the car a sports seat rather than a fixed bucket seat. recliners have a pivoting back rather than a fixed one so you have more adjustment but you dont save the weight you would with a bucket. depends what you want really

Pete - rarely have rear passengers so that would be fine.

Loony - Not worried about weight and stuff, I doubt Ill ever get that competitive! I did like Hughs seats though.

If I can go with the harnesses and normal 182 seats, Ill just go for that, I just really want the harnesses.

Roamer - do you have any pictures of the harnesses when you had normal seats?

arianne if you want buckets that arent low go for corbeau im only short and i thought the same but corbeau subframes are height adjustable i put them on the highest setting and they were to high lol

But I like harnesses as they feel so much safer... Nothing garish, just black or something to blend in with the interior.

They may feel a lot safer but you really have got to have them really tight so you cant move or theyre pointless.

You could get a nice set of Willans harnesses in black that would blend in well.

How do you people with harnesses stop that annoying beeping noise if you dont plug the normal seatbelt in. If i go more than 10 yrds without my seatbelt on it annoys me!

McShugs seats are Corbeau Carrera Recliners and as Mandy has said the corbeau subframes are height adjustable. I am only short - 5 and a bit and I can drive the car no problems at all.

As for harnesses he has http://www.lukeracing.co.uk/Luke Pro 4 point 50 mm harnesses - they are made by corbeau and are available in red, blue or black and different widths - McShug picked the blue to match the seats and the paint work.

I myself do not like driving around town in the harnesses - as it make reversing and looking over my shoulder difficult - this is due to the harnesses really holding you in nice and snug and I have to loosen them off to enable myself to move around to reverse etc.. therefore, I feel that they are not doing their job properly.

I also suffer from them rubbing against my neck - I think this is due to my size but McShug has recently managed to get some harness pads free from Corbeau - so I will let you know how I get on with those...

Luke harnesses are available from
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue/category_list.asp?CLS=MSPORT&PGRP=MP016&GRP=MC023Demon Tweeks

Hope this helps
H

Thanks for the info H, very helpful esp as Im the same height.

And Pete, too.

Lots of things to consider...

you can get harnesses which instead of bolting in at the back they clip into the existing rear seat belt holders.
