woodruff key missing off the crank pulley

  Clio 172 sport
Today my mechanic has come to fit me a new cambelt kit and dephaser.

After locking the crank he took the crank pulley off to make sure the tdc markings lined up, which it did but he noticed the woodruff key is missing Grrrr.

I just home renault have these as i really want to get the car on the road

  dan's cast offs.
To be serious though they don't have one, nor do they have timing marks. Could be time to start losing confidence in your mechanic ;)

Yes despite looking like it should have one it doesn't on the 172/182

They are all floating pulleys on these engines.

Right,

I have taken both pulleys off and taken the rocker off,

I am abit worried in the condition of the carriers and cams- the car has done 115k

Is it worth getting another rocker cover?

If you get another rocker cover I assume you don't know you then need to remove the head and spend a few hundred quid getting it line bored to suit the new cover?

Finding a decent secondhand head would be far cheaper.

If you search there are some recent links to the manuals that will help you out. LSD182

Difficult to tell how bad that is from the pics. But if it wasn't noisy before and you don't want to spend any money on it I would just put back together and see how you get on. They are all old bangers now after all.

True enough Mark, if its just a runabout not something to love and cherish Im sure it will work on that cover, I just wouldnt want it near one of my cars but I tend to keep them for years so dont want knackered bits in the engine.

I undone the crank pulley nut before i stripped the car down. Because i wanted to double check that the crank was locked in the correct place. Its going back together as it is, and when it does decide to blow up i will just replace it with a low mileage engine. Not messing around with another head, skimming it, new head gasket then the bottom end fails... been there done that.
