Guess who's back..... (Clio 220 Trophy content)

  Megane 225 F1
Hi all. Been away for about 4 years while I owned my Megane.

While I enjoyed the 225 Megane, it was forever fearful of things going wrong and having to spend £££ on it. In the 4 years, I had spent a lot on it and as it was on 125k, it got to the stage where I wanted a new car.

I was going to get a 1 series BMW, diesel due to work travel, but after a promotion, the amount of traveling around the UK is very limited now and so diesel wasn't a priority. Then my brother, who worked for Renault, sent me a message to say that a batch of facelift Renault Sport Trophys had arrived in the U.K. , and that he could get me discount. So I popped down one afternoon, went through my options and agreed to buy one. The thing that swayed it for me, was the LED headlights and the updated R-Link media player. My brother has a 1.2 Mk4 Clio and these areas really let it down. Also the Trophy wheels, as I'm not a massive fan of the standard 200 EDC wheels.

Picked it up on Wednesday after work, went for a drive and loved it. (Note, I have driven a Clio 200 EDC previously, and did enjoy it, just hadn't driven a 220 Trophy).

Had a few hours spare today so went for a drive across Salisbury plane, and got a few pics. Didn't stop for too many pics and I was having so much fun driving. The auto box is so addictive with the paddles, and the overrun noise is lovely in Sport mode. Also the rev matching on downshifts is a nice touch too. I know the Clio has mixed reactions to the auto box, but I like it. On my daily commute, it's a god send as it's a long 20 mile stretch of road, where the speed limits go from 60, to 30, back up to 60 and so on and on, with no junctions or roundabouts. Then the last 10 miles is a mixture of A / B roads, with less traffic.

Anyway, here's some pics. Good to be back on here again.

That looks lovely. Really like them in red and the led lights are awesome. Only seen them in the showroom but very nice and bright.
I'd love one and am still contemplating it. Would have to be a trophy 220 though.

Not you again.

Facelift looks a lot better with those flag lights IMO. You can actually tell it's a renaultsport from the front much more easily.

Is it much of an improvement in terms of press paddle>change gear response on the trophy compared to the normal one?

Welcome back Will
I couldnt tell that was a trophy if it drove past me, still look abit bland imo

Nice colour though
I was half expecting to see your, "I love a Trophy and will own one one day" comment I've seen from you before (at least I think it's you?), but no. Speaks volumes. Don't get me wrong Im sure it's a great car but for me it's not special enough. Having said that I've never driven one so what do I know?!

Haha indeed me, i am a big fan of the 182 trophy

But this as you say is just not special enough

Really do like the 220 Trophys and the new Face-Lift 220, they are a very capable car from what i've watched and read. Would love a good drive in one!

Would have to be LY for me though! Enjoy :)

Nice car. i see a lot of new clios now but cant tell which one is a sport, trophy etc as said above they are not as different as they used to be.
Those roads look good to drive on, may have to head over that way.

Will did you go for the seat upgrade?

No, looking at the seats, they weren't special looking enough for me to warrant them. The standard seats hold you in position plenty, and are a significant upgrade from the Recaro Trendlines in my Megane that were so unsupportive.

Not you again.

Indeed, me again! I'm a bit more mature these days though.....

It was about 2 years ago that I drove the Clio 200 EDC, so I can't remember how much of an improvement it is, but I can't remember it being that bad when I drove it. End of the day, the only other flappy paddle I've driven is my dads e92 M3, and I'm not expecting the Clio to be as good as that. For me, it's good enough. It's useable and I enjoy using them.

Welcome back Will
Hey buddy. Will be good to come down and see you and the others soon. I'm still living in Salisbury now, so let me know of any future meets.

I think those that are being critical of the Trophy name, have got to step bank and have a think. When was the last time that Renault actually released a proper Trophy worthy car?

The MK2 Megane Trophy wasn't special.
The Mk3 Megane Trophy became an upgrade of the current Megane, but it was the Trophy-R that was the special one.
Has there been a Clio Trophy since the 182 Trophy?

For me, the Trophy name is just a name. Doesn't mean anything as you can't get a Clio 220 not Trophy. I went for it because with the discount I got, it ended up being about the same as a Clio 200 without discount, and so it was a no brainer to go for the Clio with more power and revised gearbox and such. Also comes with reversing camera which is useful, and I thought that was an option, but it's standard.

Out of interest are the optional Seats the same as the optional ones on the Pre-Face 220 Trophy? and Akra Zaust is an option aswell?

The guy I sold my Megane to, told me after a weekend of thrashing it, the clutch went. Glad I didn't give you a lift home the other week!!

Yh the options are the same as far as I know. If they hadn't been the Recaro Sportster ones like the Meganes have, I probably would have got them as I love them.

Your not on your own. Looks like a 1.2 to me.

I like the stealth look, my PS is just the same, looks like a standard car with big wheels.
The look on folks faces when it gets let off the lead is funny though ;)

The seats aren't the same as pre facelift wing back Trophy seats, they've stopped making the wing back ones as it takes too long for the factory to make them so now just offer leather versions of the standard seat.

Very nice mate, the 200T's have really grown on me in recent months - Seem to becoming more popular now.
It's good to see you back!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Good to see some familiar names.

Done about 700 miles in it now and still loving it. My 60 mile round daily commute is a breeze with the auto box but a quick flick of the gear stick to manual and a press of the RS button and I can have some fun.

I will be taking it on track, no doubt.
