Welcome to ClioSport.

Where are you based and can we assume you don`t have a supercharger fitted?

  Clio 182
Hi I'm based in Croydon, yeah deffo doesn't have a supercharger fitted, even when the clutch it pressed in the noise goes but if still pressed in and you increase the revs the noise will appear again

Does the noise disappear altogether if you put the car in gear, but keep the clutch pressed down?

  Clio 182
In gear the noise is still there with the clutch pressed in or left, whenever the car is revved or over the idle but under 2000 ish rpm the noise comes its bizzar lol

Well the good news is that it`s not the mainshaft bearings in the gearbox.

Clutch thrust bearing is a high probability.

Is the bite point on the clutch quite low?

Posting some pics of the car is customary for new members.

If anything the clutch is quite high but quite heavy

Clutches are quite heavy.

Use it for a bit, the noise may disappear if the car has stood.

What`s the mileage, belt history etc.

Clutch will get plenty of use in Croydon.

The milage is at 112k and belt was done 2 years ago so it's in date, I've been using the car frequently for the past week since brought but no change

Thrust bearing will soldier for some time as it`s not a screamer.

Budget for a clutch change for when it gets worse..

Who did the belts?

Did it include water pump & dephaser?

Renault who did the belts but was done around 89k when read last it just says belt kit was done so I'm not sure that included water pump

Power steering pump? Mine has had a slight whine for a while, as did the previous one.

Since when did the rpm drop because you have stopped stirring the gearbox oil?

Stirring gear box oil? When I disengage the clutch the rpms will drop which causes the noise to dissappear but if I leave the clutch disengaged and Rev the car the noise Will still come back around 2000rpm, with it engaged it will make the noise at the same Rev range in any gear.

I don`t understand what you are saying.

The clutch plate is engaged when the pressure plate grips it and spins the gearbox mainshaft. the cogs on it and stirs the oil.

When you disengage the clutch, relieved of this drag, the rpm might rise a little, but not enough to notice.

Seems to me you should look into the authenticity of the belt service, there should be a detailed invoice with part numbers & prices, totalling something around

£550, not something scribbled in a service book.

And the whining could be the water pump or a worn belt pulley.

This one included a water pump & some additional work.

From the sounds of it the whine doesn't sound to hopeful ? might be worth taking it to someone to have a look over
It seems on cold starts the whine isn't there only when it gets up to temp it starts deffo seems to be coming from the engine bay

That sounds like a good idea.

I regret attempting to answer your original " how long is a piece of string question"

When you posted" when the clutch it pressed in the noise goes but if still pressed in and you increase the revs the noise will appear again"

I assumed you meant the car was stationary with the hand brake on and in neutral.

Not coasting down the road.

Yup the car was stationary when I did it, I'll try and get it looked at during the weekend

As you suggest the best thing is to get the car looked at preferably by someone who knows about these cars.

stick a long screwdriver on the power steering pump and place ear on top of screwdriver, this will tell you if its pump whining mate
