Tge little plastic cap thing, it's no longer there and is it important? I believe it would stop oil coming out? Also old picture so the engine is no longer covered in all that oil😂

It's only a breather, it's not essential. I've not had one on mine for years. Put a silicone bung over it if you're concerned, but mine has never dripped oil.

You would struggle to fill up the box with oil without it.

Don't you fill the gearbox up through the plug hole on the side?

The pipe is ususally much longer than that on the breather, it's been shortened a fair bit.

To be fair mine is that short and I'm sure it came like that. The previous owner didn't touch the car at all.

Mine goes up to just under the head of the engine as does the one we've just taken out another 182.

Probably a variation from factory.

Yeah you do, but you need the breather to let the air out as you're putting oil in. Othewise you'd be there for hours.

Changed the oil on mine loads of times and never took the cap off the breather.

But then again the pipe I use to fill from the front doesn't create an air tight seal

as above not needed unless you were making an air tight seal around the filler hole when filling it.

later cars had long breathers, some of the 1.2 16v ones came up and clipped onto the battery tray at same height as the top of the battery.

This, and my memory isn't great but it's a pretty large plug you take out to fill it through.

Unless people do their gearbox oil through a hosepipe now?
