Manifold, exhaust, cat decision/advice

Hi guys,

This has probably been done to death already but Id like some advice & opinions on what I should do in my situation (I'll try and keep if brief).

Clio 172 - 90% track use. Needs to pass MOT and track noise limits. K-tec unsilenced cat back fitted. Cambelt will be due in a few months and I'll most likely have some cat cams fitted at the same time (pussied out last time).

With the the cams in mind, to get the most out of them I should ideally have 182 manifold and de-cat/sports cat fitted.

I can see I have a few options with varying levels of cost and ball ache.

- Fit a 182 manifold, k-tec sports cat (182 mani to 172 exhaust). Expensive option but no CAT switching, will pass MOT and should be quiet enough for track?
- Keep 172 manifold, fit decat pipe. Switch cat in for MOT (ball ache). Will probably be too loud for track? Might need to buy silenced centre section to pass?
- Keep 172 manifold, fit sports cat. Should pass MOT and be quiet enough for track. No switching needed.
- Keep everything as it is. Cheap, less hassle, will pass eveything but will not be making the most of the cams.

What whould you recommend? I know the 182 manifold makes a difference but is it worth it in this situation?

Wildcard option is to not fit cams, keep it all as it is and put the money towards a turbo setup in 2-3 years time that will likely never happen cos house n s**t...

Thanks! :)

For the less hassle and performance gain I'd say go for a 182 manifold with a sports cat link pipe.

182 manifold and sports cat would be my personal choice as well, unless you can find a cheap enough 182 cat and get the mod done on it as its basically a sports cat anyway

Im guessing the mod is to make it line up with the 172 cat back? Lamba's are different too right?

Put a 182 manifold and sports cat on

Sell the 172 cat to me

Enjoy car

I see there's one on ebay for £500 £££

So this cat below is obviously going to be pretty poor quality at £70 but I could have it modified to fit the 172 cat back which would cost less than a k-tec sports cat..?

Looks like either way im getting a 182 mani on then.

The midrange gains with a 182 manifold are worth it when you can pick them up for £60 and they don't crack. Plus they're easier to work on too as you don't have to have 36 hands to fit a gasket kit haha

That 172 cat will never sell at that much as they're worth less than £400. They're barely worth much more with the metals processed. I'm sure @0ss bought one of them cats and melted it 😂 If you can just get a sports cat from an Evo or something and have it welded into a link pipe as that will be cheaper. Selling your existing cat willpay for everything you need😂

Yeah I'm looking forward to the benefits of the 182 mani but not f**king around with the subframe tbh.:ROFLMAO:Think ill just do a load of stuff over one weekend, wishbones, track rod ends, ARB bushes etc and mani all at once.

I'll try and remember to let you know when I have the 172 cat for sale ;)

Yeah I've got mine to do but I can't do it yet as my other car is broken and I like to take my time 😂

I've already done all the hard work by rebuilding everything when it was off the road for a year lol. Yeah just give me a shout when you come to sell as I can get the best prices through a friend of mine :)

Ok will do (y) Oh, was there any reason you suggested an evo sports cat or could you use any? I guess one with the same diameter pipe and a similar size overall would be a start?

You can use any, but Evo ones are good quality and most Evo owners aren't gonna be running a cat so can usually be had cheaper

If you can't find one then get a magnaflow one, they're pretty good quality and come in either 100 CPSI or 200CPSI

  Hi comp phase 1
Don’t forget it’ll all need remapping to gain the most out of all the mods

If you're going to the bother of fitting a 182 manifold put a proper flange on it before fitting.
I guess you are talking about the end that meets the CAT? Is this just for ease of fitment/better join?

If you want an Evo sports cat I've got the stock one from a FQ 360
