Mk2 RS prices

  Clio 182 FF
I cant be the only one who thinks that the prices for these little things has gone through the roof this year? I bought my first 182 in May 2020 for 1350 which was a full fat model in titanium silver and that was with belts done. Now, if i look around, which i am, for a daily 172/182 i cant find anything sub 2k thats any good. Im seeing base model silver 172s with no belts done going for 2k+!!!

If you want to talk real sill money put the word Ford in front of " mk2 RS"
now that's a proper investment!
all im saying is that these cars used to be really good value for money, and now you find 182s without any cup packs going for 4k+ just because theyre under 100k, seems silly to me. But youre right, if you had a mk2 RS from new (ford this is) youre certainly grinning now

Why is it silly? Maybe it was just silly how cheap they were before. £4K is not a lot of money for a car. As for cup packs I don’t think they make much difference to most people anymore.
Given the number of clio breakers, track car wannabes all taking cars off the road we are now at a tipping point. Plus these are all now at least due their 3rd or 4th big cambelt service. If you are investing £5-700 in a cambelt now you ain’t going to sell a car unless you get some kind of return otherwise you may as well sell the CAT for £400 and then break the car.

same thing happened with 205’s I had 5 of them 4 all at once on my drive I think even my most expensive one was £1100. All sold for peanuts allnow worth a fortune. That was 1999/2000 they would’ve been 8-13 years old then.... see a pattern emerging here.

1*2’s are now becoming a throw back to youth for people in their late 30’s early 40’s, many of us have disposable cash. I had clio 182’s as demos when I worked in dealerships. So it’s a nice throw back. My car isn’t a daily it’s a weekend/evening toy, if and when I feel like driving it. Personally I think the days of picking up a 1*2 for a grand and using it as a daily are long gone

Im always curious as to why owners of these cars get angry, and in most cases quite militant on for sale posts, when their cars increase in Value?

I remember last year selling my restored MK2 Golf GTI, all the MK2 FB Group people were whining on saying it wasnt worth £5k. It sold for £5,300, so I guess they were right.

Are people desperate for their cars to remain worthless?

I understand in the OP's case hes looking to buy one which makes it a pain. But if they go up, they dont very often go back down again. Even if they have effectively doubled in price, at least they wont lose half their value while you own it.

What's even better is you may be able to pick it up. Use it look after it & sell it for more than you got it for.

Now that's cheap motoring.

The gain in value will offset the cost of maintence...... meaning people look after them and more nice ones stay on the road.

Obviously if you were dailying it does not work so well.

I managed to buy mine, do all the work to it, sell it for a profit.

However, I did then buy it back a month later for the price I sold it for...

Between me and my Mrs we have 2 mk2 rs clios and I just love them to drive, not that fast but very fun, just thought I could be doing with more of that day to day without having to shell out 4k on one 😬 guess ill get looking at the Mk3 then 😂

  Clio R.S 182 FF
I picked up a 55 plate 182 FF about 2 months ago for £2.3k. It’s on 114k but had full service history, 15 years worth of receipts and the belts/dephaser done 18 months ago. I haggled to get for a little less, but I wanted OEM with FSH so I had little bargaining power as there was nothing out there.
I’ve bought one as these cars are only going to go up in value. Light weight, NA engine 👍🏻 I’m not expecting it to make me rich, but I do expect any rise to offset the running costs so expect free motoring 👌

I will be advertising this one at the weekend on here for 2k. Artic blue, 118k, Belts done, standard apart from lowering springs, straight through exhaust system. It has some lacquer peel down the N/S and rear quarter has a few car park dents. Presentable though and drives lovely. Loads of new parts. Reading this I might put it up for 3k 🤣(joking).

May be interested in this pal, seems a good price for one of these, I've seen cars like this listed for 3.2k in instances but they've been on for months, people must think they're made of gold now 😂 but message me as I'm not wanting one instantly, it'll be a week or two

All about supply and demand, nothing new, cars get rare as they get old and cost more, simple really. Market for mk2's is now a sellers and will remain so, it happens to all decent niche market segment vehicles. Move from buyers to sellers market and prices go up

Have a look at the decline in numbers on:

It's basic supply and demand.

Whats happening to the trophys? They just garage queens now?
I mentioned this before in one of the last couple of posts on prices....it’s an interesting dynamic, Trophies seem to have been mothballed away. I wonder at what point in the future the standard 182 becomes rarer than the trophies...can see that happening eventually.

  Clio R.S 182 FF
That’s only up to Q2 2020! Should imagine that numbers going to take a hit over the last quarter

From 5.7k to 3.6k, so that’s an approx. one third reduction, with the rate dropping fast. And of the 3.6k currently left, 1.6k are SORN. I’d imagine that over this ‘20 Q4 and ‘21 Q1 the number SORN might go above the number on the road. That’s a clear indicator that prices are rising because ppl are starting to buy to keep for the longer term.

Can completely relate with this!

I reckon 1*2s in the hands of people with shoestring budgets are dwindling (cars now well past that age where they need constant work done), and perhaps moving to people with disposable income / other cars and have no issue paying more for good examples. Happens to all of the cars that were once worthless and are now too expensive to put miles on.

The RS was sold in relatively large volume but the number of track cars and breakers has accelerated its inevitable rise in value.

Between me and my Mrs we have 2 mk2 rs clios and I just love them to drive, not that fast but very fun, just thought I could be doing with more of that day to day without having to shell out 4k on one 😬 guess ill get looking at the Mk3 then 😂
It's funny that I keep reading people say they're not that fast, when in the real world of UK roads you can only really go faster by taking huge liberties with your license. I honestly enjoy a good road blast more in the 182 than I did on my old 265 Cup which just carried silly speeds everywhere.

although it will be nowhere near top money. It’s good to know as a seller that the values are strong at the moment.

Isn’t that because there’s a company buying all MK2 Fords and artificially inflating the price? Certainly was the case last time I looked.

I should imagine the cost of ownership of a MK2 Ford RS from new to today, plus the likely needed but and bolt ground up resto. You probably wouldn’t be as ££‘s in as you would think.

  LY Meg Cup-S + MX5
Ironically trophys are quite common with 500 made. The rarer colours are a 10th of that or less.

That's why nice colour ones been fetching good money last year or so.

Std cup pack car slightly easier ownership prospect without having to worry about Sachs.

Cars like r26r and trophy get all the press for dynamic ability and limited numbers. But std cars did is not sell in big numbers and a pretty rare sight and dynamically were class leaders till Ltd editions came out.

Exactly. I wouldn’t be surprised if Inferno and definitely PB & LY are all rarer than a trophy! Long term of all the Trophies are locked and moth balled they will likely be just as common as my silver s**t box. Not saying mine would ever be as desirable, nor do I care. I get enjoyment out of mine just tinkering with it. I get no return on my savings really so a couple of grand tied up in a car that is going upwards (albeit slower than the more desirable colours) in value makes sense. That’s not why I bought it mind! Just nice to own one.

I wonder how many of the sorn ones are tidy road cars? A lot of them will be scabby examples sat on people's drives awaiting a resto that never happens or the owner thinks eventually his 100k miler that's sat for 5 years will suddenly be worth £10k. There's probably some track cars that are on the sorn list too so just because it says 1600 are sorn doesn't mean there's 1600 mint road cars stashed away.

it’s a good point. There are many amateur home breakers as well, I’ll bet 90% of them are not giving out the certificate of destruction, or the owners completing the yellow slip. So the cars sit SORN until otherwise someone does something about it.

Mine was one of the SORN during Q2 purely cause the tax was up, I had things to do to it and have another daily despite not really going anywhere. So beyond the points above, I wonder what impact 2020 has had on the numbers? Will we see a sudden reduction of numbers SORN when the Q3 number get counted.

Are you my brother from another mother lol
I had 6 205 gti's at one point as they were cheaper to buy another than repair. I scrapped so many as they had no value. If I had storage space and some foresight I'd be better off.
Now that moment has also passed with the Clio Mk2. I said to a few friends about 4 years ago that Mk1 Williams were the one to buy and ever since prices have increased dramatically. I would suggest anyone who wants a Mk3 grab a good one as the market always moves on to the next.

Good ones will always demand good money from now in I reckon however every owner/seller now thinks it’s a future classic, declare it’s mint and wants top money for sheds.

did you have a blank tax disc as well? Back in the days where the only record of tax was having the disc in the windscreen...😂 only 1 of mine ever worked at one time. My particular favourite was my 1.6 which was finished in silver with No sunroof. It was absolutely mint. One of the reason I like silver clios now. God I miss that car. I bought it in bits and then proceeded to tell my dad we had to put it together. He then proceeded to tell me never to buy a car in bits unless you took it apart yourself. Valuable life lesson there. Still we got it going again. It was fantastic. Think I sold it for £600 😂

I only had one working car at any time so I had a legitimate tax disc lol The rest donored parts to keep the primary car working.
Only once did I sell for a profit - a 205 Gentry I made about £200 on - that got converted to a GTi6 engine by the next owner.
I still have one shell from 2009 thats a 'project' (basically sitting in bits doing nothing)

There are a lot of people taking the piss out there, but I think it’s fair to say what we have is a “future classic”. Given the abuse I would say nearly all of them have faced over the years, there’s still an encouraging amount that survived.

The biggest killer are guys that strip them for a track day, do two and then flog it. Those cars just bounce between owners who can’t really afford (or at least, don’t want to pay) for proper maintenance. And on a track car, that means many more service intervals than a normal car. They usually end up blowing up or crashing and being stripped for parts by some cannibal (guilty!!!!).

I know we consider the trophy’s not that rare, but they are rarer than most “special editions” Mclaren and Ferrari put out. And they’re significantly rarer than a Ferrari F40. Not exactly a common sight!

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if it's on 12k or 212k, they all have selector seal leaks and have a diamond on the front and back 😂

I have two 172’s

one has 116k and the gearbox leaks a lot

One has 135k and the gearbox is bone dry (had it 9 years and doubt it was ever repaired before)

They’ve lived very different lives though and the lower mileage one has had a harder life for sure. The higher Mile one has always been bone stock

My Trophy has been well looked after but certainly after 130000 miles and 15 years of UK roadsalt the underside is tired.
They are certainly at the age that a little bit of extra care is going to pay dividends later. Not if you have that 'cheap car' mentality though.
