Water softener/ filter

Evening all

Anyone use any kind of inline water filter etc?

Our water is extremely hard and leaves a right mess when washing cars. Not sure if a filter will help, or would I need a softener?

Ideally just want something to help rinse off not having to towel it down through the winter - the less I touch the car the better 😂

I'm able to fit something inline pretty simply - so something semi permanent would be ideal

I’ve been looking at ones like this. For the same reasons. I’m looking at one for the outside tap (pipework for which is in the downstairs loo) and under the kitchen sink.
I don’t know how quick I’ll get through them though. Is 60,000 litres a lot? Or will I be changing them too often?

Isn’t this more for improving drinking water? Sure I saw bear grylls flogging something similar.

I've got an 11L Vyair, looks similar to linked below. I don't use it every wash and only to rinse to save the resin. Works really well. In summer I use an Adams shampoo that doesn't stain when it dries on the paintwork, just a quick rinse and let it air dry.

In winter wash, rinse with DI water and let it airdry, no need to stay out in the cold longer than needed!

Doesn't work with a pressure washer without a buffer though due to the low flow rate of the filter.

Also get a cheap hardness tester so you can keep an eye on how the filter is performing.

@Yosemite Sam as @Matt Cup says, that's not what you want for washing your car, first part of the description mentions you need their RO system (reverse osmosis) to reduce hardness or remove solids. I believe that's a similar system window cleaners use.

Would be awesome to have a system like that trickle into a 1000l IBC tank and have that feed into a pump/pressure washer 😍

The vyair resin vessels are mega for spot free rinse off. Ive got one on the never ending list of bits to buy.

So just to understand this correctly the Vyair is only used ONCE you have finished with snowfoaming/shampooing off the car and you are rinsing the suds off? You don’t use it for the entire washing process?

Vyair looks hard to source?

Good info here

So presume the resin isn't tied to the vessel manufacturer - ie you can just fill them with whatever?

I have a vessel and resin I can't be arsed using anymore

Thought the resin goes off if left unused or can you just connect up & use intermittently?

Like the idea of rinsing without hard water marks but don’t always get time every week?

I bought mine in 2020, used it weekly for a bit but it's also stood for extended periods of time (months) and it still worked fine last week on the original resin, showing 0ppm on the hardness meter.

I do recommend cutting off a short loop of garden hose to connect the inlet/outlet to each other so air can't get to the wet resin.

It goes off and you have to turn it regularly if you don't use it.

Make me an offer and you can have it
