BG 182 cheap runabout.

Bit of a read, grab a brew or a beer.

For a little while the missus and I have wanted a cheap runabout for the school run, shops and on the days I travel to the office I park at the local train station. We have both have our own daily cars but they don't warm up on those journeys, so we agreed a 3rd car (4th including my 172 Cup) would be a half decent idea. 1st world problems.

We looked at Clio Campuses but they were all pretty rough and the wife said "I like the Clio's with two exhaust tips"..... "you mean a Clio 182?"....

Licking my lips, I ran to all the usual places and of course, FB Market place came up with the goods.

One from the 10min test drive.

And on my drive with the missus looking happy because it has two exhausts.

Black Gold, both Cup Packs, 122k Miles, no history and a crunch in to 3rd gear. Serv, ABS and Engine light on.

Noice.

It gets better. Kind of.

It was off the road for 6 years. The guy I bought it from had ideas of a track car but was up to his eyes with MX5 time attack cars, which meant the Clio took a back seat.

Taking in to account the issues with it, I made an offer and drove off in to the sunset.

First impressions, it's very comfortable, it's RAPID.

Doing my own sleuthing I was able to find it had an owner who was on here and I found the owner before him who was super helpful and provided me with some of the history from 2017, almost ten years ago, but still.

Got it home and made a to do list.
Gearbox - it really is that bad going in to 3rd, fear not @NorthloopCup is on the case.
Service - Oil and filter, cabin filter and put a standard airbox on it.
Tyres - current tyres are 10 years old and cracking.
Belts and dephaser - soon.
Brakes - more on that.

So when I stuck my head under the car on inspection purchase I noticed the rear passenger caliper had one very shiney bolt but thought nothing of it. When I got it home I jacked it up and decided to have a poke around. Gave it a scan with RS Tuner = Rear ABS sensor. Fine.

Cool. I'll do rear discs and pads with an ABS sensor.

Remember that rear caliper with the shiney bolt? Yeah, it was GLUED on. The head of the bolt was GLUED on.

WTAF. Anyway, moving on. It gets worse before it gets better.

I spoke to one of those FB Clio breakers and asked for a rear passenger caliper. And I got this.

Mistakes happen. Fine. I was asked to post it back and the correct one would be sent out to me. Posted back, at my cost (no offer of a refund to cover their mistake) and then I recieved this.

Yes. That's a snapped bleed nipple.

At this point I gave up and ordered a reproduction caliper from Ebay. Bigistake.

I fitted this caliper (I've fitted many a rear caliper), new rear disc, new pads and retaining clips etc and I went for a drive. I got no more than 2 miles from my house, bedding the new discs and pads...when I hear an almighty bang. I thought it was a blow out and then I thought a piston had ejected from the block. Alright, I'll come to a stop. I said I'll come to a stop..... NO BRAKES.

Managed to get home engine braking.

Took a look at the caliper and.....

FFS. No idea. It also snapped the brand f**king new disc and damaged the wheel cosmetically.

I was pissed off and I left it on axle stands on my drive much to my neighbours delight for a month.

Eventually I sourced a genuine second hand caliper without a snapped bleed nipple. Fitted it, bled the brakes and that was that drama over.

Now that was over, I thought I'd do some far easier jobs...he says.

Binned the black side repeaters

Cabin filter... This looked promising.

Yikes.
Fresh one in.
1000065009.webp

The updates you come to this forum for, I know.

Then I did a bit of this.
1000065016.webp

And treated some of those usual areas.

Then I changed the coolant and coolant bottle.

I had some almost brand new injectors laying around from my 172 Cup before going 197 injectors, so I dropped them in.

I also fitted new front brembo HC discs and pads.

And after all that it's been a right blast.

Still needs a gearbox and tyres, but honestly, it's a really bloody good Clio.

The thing which it's making this Clio stand out is how bloody fast it is. I know it has a 98RON map from RS Tuner and a catback but it's quite quick.
