Assetto Corsa Rally

I know this was mentioned in one of the other AC threads - but I thought it might be worthy of its own thread.

Early access of v0.1 has been released today and I have to say that first impressions are very good. It looks great, sounds good too - but the biggest plus point is the lack of that weird 'hand-holding' that Dirt Rally 2.0 seemed to do for you at random.

That game had a strange steering assist that would occasionally make you feel like you were a driving god. The first couple of times you were smug in thinking that you'd nailed a section of bends - but after a while, you knew the game was pseudo-assisting you. Worse, the corners or sections that you did want the assistance, we're never there when you needed them.

ACR has none of that - you feel like the control (or inherent lack of) with the car on the surface, is purely down to you. Although they have only worked with Kunos as a technical partnership - the v0.1 release absolutely pisses all over the Assetto Corsa Evo release efforts so far. It's already a much more polished and rewarding experience.

I've only tried it with the XBox controller so far - but will give it a go with the wheel over the weekend.

Only cost £17.99 on Steam as well - due to the other Assetto titles already in my library. :)

I picked it up the moment it dropped.
The hype from the likes of Broadbent etc saying it's really good was enough for me, and that was before I realised how cheap it is - for a modern title that's an absolute steal.

I've not had a chance to play it yet myself but I can't wait to at the first opportunity I get.
Saw this fairly interesting review, drove ACR, did a rally, drove ACR again.

If they eventually expand it to have every Subaru ever campaigned, the 04 Focus and the 307 WRC I'll be happy.

Really interested to see how this develops. I hope they make a console version too, as I assume it will require a pretty meaty PC to run otherwise, and I can't be doing with buying another computer.

Runs very slick on my system - a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with an RTX3090 at 1440 resolution.

It looks smoother than what DIRT 2.0 is in a number of places and I've not seen any evidence of texture pop-in yet either from poorly optimised draw distances, either.

Mines broken, car keeps coming off the road into the trees.

Edit: Also can't get the the thumbstick to register for the menus either just doesn't recognise it is there when setting the buttons

Noticed on mine that the graphics started to stutter a bit. Once every 10 seconds or so - went down to 9fps for the briefest of moments.

Downloaded nVidia Inspector and enabled Resize Bar globally - as for some strange reason the nVidia drivers don't always apply this, even when they say they do. Super smooth again after that.

I was curious and checked my setup... resizable bar was disabled on mine, too! It didn't make a massive difference on my system but it was still noticeable. It looks and sounds so good. Even playing on a controller right now, it is so rewarding when you nail a sequence of bends.

AC Evo feels quite flat in comparison.

I'm sure I saw someone say that the damage is only visual at the moment, so doesn't affect the way the car drives.

Booted it up today and had a little play. I have an odd graphical issue though. There is a horizontal scan line that works itself up the screen when driving the car. Not sure how to cure it or what the actual problem is though. It does it in medium and ultra settings too.

I must add I am using my works monitor at the moment which obviously isn’t optimised for gaming so maybe that isn’t helping matters?

I'm really enjoying this! :ROFLMAO: Just about to try the latest update with a laser-scanned Monte Carlo rally over the Col de Turini.

In the meantime, a sedate drive through Wales. 👀

Following this with interest, though will wait for full console release, as don't have much of a gaming PC.

I really hope they get the tarmac physics right, as that seems to let down most rally games.

I don't know why, but I just cannot get the flow right with rally games and using a wheel and pedals setup. It's like there's too much delay on the inputs, then completely the opposite where it's hyper sensitive and you seemingly can't even drive in a straight line.

I always do much better with an XBox pad in the end.

Dusted off the sim rig and had a crack at AC Rally again this evening (and AC Evo too, but I'll update that one seperately)

When I first played, the control settings were really weird. You set both ingame and the wheel to 900 degrees and the steering would be wildly off, and soft lock didn't work properly. No two cars would scale properly. I also found the steering to be massively twitchy and bouncy.

I'm happy to report that's all sorted now, soft lock works nicely and the cars all turn the right amount. I added some damper in AC Rally (20) and that massively improved things in terms of the twitchy springiness of the steering and it's now an absolute blast to drive.

The Monte stages are fecking brilliant. Fast, twisty, and a great atmosphere with plenty of cuts too. The flares and fireworks at night are great.

I do still have a couple of issues though, that I hope will get fixed. Certainly not enough to stop me enjoying it though.

No crowd noise, I know that's a bit of a low priority on a rally sim but you can hear the fireworks popping off but not the people screaming and blowing horns alongside them? It feels weird.

I'm getting a weird kind of chromatic abberation effect on the trees, but pink/green. They very faintly flicker those different colours as I'm driving the stage, it's a bit distracting.

Some of the pace notes are so early I forget them by the time I reach the corner, but others are well timed, I'll see about whether I can adjust the timing but I feel like it'll end up being a tradeoff between some being too early and some being too late.

Glad I wasn't the only one who found the controls a bit weird. Not tried it since the update, so will give the wheel another bash with it at some point.

This is definitely one of my faves at the moment, even on a gamepad! I haven't even touched AC EVO recently.

I am still trying to nail a decent stage but there's always a handful of mistakes! :ROFLMAO:

What settings do you use for game pad and which game pad do you use? I’m finding it difficult to control the Pug 208 as the rear end is extremely skittish and am wondering if it’s the set up that I’ve got wrong.

After much faffing and tweaking, I ended up back on default settings! 🤣 I think each car needs dialling in with different pad tweaks, but I haven't had time to do that. Hence, I have found the defaults to be a good all rounder and stuck with that for now. I am playing on an Xbox controller (wired, from my Xbox One X).

So, tried the wheel with this at dinner. The feedback is absolutely lifeless - like nothing at all coming through the wheel. Almost went off into the hedges on the first bend.

Wonder if there are some Fanatec wheel setups online. Both ACC and AC Evo have way more feel than this.
