Crunching into 5th gear

When going into 5th gear at anything above 40mph I'm getting a lovely little crunch so need to work out a plan to fix it.

Is it possible to fix it still in the car or if the box has to come off the car can it still be fixed just from removing the end cap or is it a full blown split the box apart rebuild?

I'm looking for the quickest/cheapest most simple fix because I'm tight & lazy and apart from the crunchy 5th, the box is silky smooth & mint. It's a JC5 129 box as well so not really something that's cheap(ish) & readily available for used ones unlike the 130's are

You can do it from taking the end cap off, buts it’s an awkward fiddly pain in the f**king arse.

Could be synchro, but it could be the metal spring clip that pushes the synchro down has failed. You need to know if the dog teeth on the gear and selector hub are ok too, otherwise they’ll need replacing.

Box out it’s a 30 minute job with all the bits sat there ready to go. Box in the car probably a couple of hours.

If you're saying it's like that, it means that I'll deffo lose my rag & just set fire to the car 🤣

Sounds like I'm committed to taking the box off..................................yay

If you get the box out and bring it to me, it’s a while you wait job - providing that clip hasn’t broken. If the clip has broken, ideally you want to be opening the box to retrieve it so it can’t do any damage internally.
