Are they the same on 182's and 172's? if its off a newish car it should be good for a few miles?

182 ones are longr I'm sure. Nnever had a look though.

offiside 182 is braced to the block in a bearing housing.

Its the offside I wanna replace aswell, so best just buyin a new one then as the newest 172 is 3 yrs old now.

my mate who's a mechanic at reno was saying they've had a few 172's that have blew the passenger airbag when they've used exchange driveshafts,i presume its the nearside driveshaft though
