What records mileage on 172 clocks ?

Its the clocks ie the dails units same as normal CLios.

It takes about 10 minutes to do and can save 1000s

no mate my rev counter has broke and wanted to change the whole clocks as i've got a set cheap,can the digital mileage counter be swapped onto another set of clocks?my 172 has only done 17000 mile so not much reason for wanting to clock it

Only on the phase 1's and Cups the phase 2's use the ABs speedo signal.

No you can't swap the mileage I don't think.

Just find some with 17k or less and then you will have no problem.

iirc, it's not illegal to do it, but it is illegal to sell the car (unless you declare it)

As said nope its only illegal to miss sell the car on with false milage although 995 of people know including the people doing it its for illegally miss selling cars whey there doing it.
