1.4 RT Mk1 Ph1 Recently Acquired... help!

OK I am new to Renault, only ever driven other people's in the past an never ever owned. I'm not a "newbie" to cars/mechanics - I've been working on (mainly) Fords for some time now but have dabbled with others. Just never French (except a Pug 106 a loooong time ago).

Anyway a few questions I can't seem to find straight forward answers to and I am unwilling to pay for a subscription to this site unless I know they will be in "protected" areas.

So here goes:

I have an L reg 1.4 RT, I am assuming it is an 8v

1. Why can't I flash full beam when main beam is on? I have to switch to full from main and back again. If sidelights only are on, I can flash.

2. Why does my passenger side electric window not work from the passenger side but does from the drivers? If I take the passenger button out, the drivers side button stops working too. For this reason, I believe the circuit goes through both buttons and needs them both to be connected for them to work at all. I assume I just need to swap the button but I want to know you're opinion first. On a side note, the window is very slow to operate compared to the drivers side.... Ideas?

3. Will later Mk1 mirrors fit? I find the early "stubby" mirrors far too small to be any decent use. I notice M reg and on mirrors are wider.

4. Does the "higher spec" dash top directly replace the lower spec one?

5. I hate the ticking clock - did they make one that doesnt tick?

6. How do I get the stereo steering stalk work with my Sony?

7. Why doesn't my interior light come on when I unlock the car remotely but my friend's later type MK1 does?

8. Where can I get an exhaust adapter pipe to fit an universal back box? "Rage" used to make these I am sure but now I cannot find any.

9. How do I fit rear brake discs?

Just the way the stalk is made Im afraid, not much can be done

Id say the pass side swicth is knackered, pick up a new one for a few pence at a scrappies

yes they will

Yes but you'll be left with a big gap unless you get the wee storage box too

How can you hear it?! Going along and/or stereo on I could never hear it, only when sat still with engine idling and stereo off, and that was a standard exhasut!

Unfortunatly Im not sure you can convert the mk1 stalks, you can with mk2s though

Its french! Also it may be something they added in later cars only

Custom exhaust place could make you one up I bet

With a RSI or Valver axle. You would need to remove the spacers on the valver axle otherwise the track would be too wide. TBh no point other than looks and thats from experience!

Try a new switch as this is quite a common problem from what I can gather. Slow operation will probably just be sticking, rub some sort of grease or oil along your window seals.

3. Will later Mk1 mirrors fit? I find the early "stubby" mirrors far too small to be any decent use. I notice M reg and on mirrors are wider. Iirc the Ph2 mirrors are even harder to see out of, however they should fit no bother.

4. Does the "higher spec" dash top directly replace the lower spec one? Is there different spec top dash's? I though the only different ones are the 16v ones which have the 3 aux dials. If there is one without the aux dials then it will be a direct fit.

5. I hate the ticking clock - did they make one that doesnt tick? Yes, my old RT's clock didnt tick and my Hybrid and williams clocks do not tick either............well not that I have noticed anyway

6. How do I get the stereo steering stalk work with my Sony? You need to buy an Autoleads harness from Halfrauds or similar...Circa £15

7. Why doesn't my interior light come on when I unlock the car remotely but my friend's later type MK1 does? None of the Mk1's interior lights come on when remotely unlocked, only once door is opened.

8. Where can I get an exhaust adapter pipe to fit an universal back box? "Rage" used to make these I am sure but now I cannot find any.Dont bother, RAGE are s**t and a back box will do f**k all

9. How do I fit rear brake discs? You will need a complete rear beam from a Valver or similar

My mk 1 phase 2 comes on when i unlock it with central locking, depends on the clio specs as they made loads of different ones.

I can hear the clock ticking when sat in the car on my lunch. I usually read a book or something and don't have music on which is why I can hear it.

I only want the Rage exhaust for the looks and that I need a new back box anyway as mine is currently blowing.

My mark 1 phase 3, has remote central locking, as soon as i unlock it from the blip, the light switches on, when locking car the remote also switches off the light.

Enjoy your car Liebo, i like my clio, just has had a lot of problems.

I'm trying to. Just gotta sort a problem with the steering/front suspension as it wont track right and clunks sometimes when cornering.

And my rusty back arches...

And I think my rear left brake cylinder or shoes or handbreak cable is busted...

Sounds like the CV joint if its clunking when cornering.
