Suggest Me A CPU

I've just stuck maximum ram in my pc (1Gb) and now im looking to change the prossesor to give it that bit more speed when running multi programs. I'm guessing the CPU ive got is well out of date but it's made do as the computer is free from most crap and just gets used for internet browsing, movie watching, music, and pictures (Oh and Football manager).

Problem is i don't know what sort of CPU would be able to replace the one ive got. This is the information i have. Can anyone help and suggest a new CPU (Non of the expensive stuff)

CPU type: AMD Athlon XP, 1524 MHz (5.75 * 265)

L2 Cache: 256kb

From what i gather it is the following (According the AIDA32)

FIC AD11 (5PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2DIMM, AUDIO

Chipset: AMD 760

  Punto/Clio GTT
what motherboard do you have?

my old motherboard only supported upto amd xp 2800, so something to check before you go buying some 3gig beast and finding its not supported

Ive no idea how to check what motherboard i have, is there a tool to use? It's really old though i know that much. if i stuck the above PCU in it would it not work full stop or would it be limited to what the motherboard could handle?

it would not work full stop.

i tried it with different multiplyers and i got various results from double boot beeps, to BSOD to blue flashing screens to just loading into bios.

most manufacturers dont print the serial on the motherboard so download everest as james says, or go into bios and get the serial out of there n google it.

pretty much guaranteed your motherboard can only handle upto a certain chip
