Network cable colour?

  172 cup TT
Hi all..

in new house with VIRGIN BB.... Moved all my PC kit from OLd to New house last night but couldnt pick up the internet.

Connected Cablemodem > WAN on the (new)Belkin router then the supplied yellow ethernet cable > ethernet port on PC...

It just wont detect the internet... I have a feeling it is EITHER :
1) Virgin havent sorted my house move on their system yet and not sending the "signal" to it.
OR
2) The Cable Modem > Router lead is wrong.. i.e: cross over or straight through (Would this make a difference and be causing the problem?)

Further info, when i then tried to connect the ethernet cable(Yellow cable) directly from the cable modem > my PC it still doesnt pick it up... This kinda indicates that our house isnt recieving the broadband yet doesnt it?..or does this just point toward the wrong "kind" of cable? - argh...

Thanks
Floodie

wow, mc bunny - quick reply thx.... Yes thats what i was thinking.... the engineers plumbed it all into my new house about THREE WEEKS ago but due to problems I havent actually been able to move until now...

The odd thing is, my old house has never been cut off from the net, i have still been able to use it for all the 3 weeks.. Surely (now maybe this is my crazy logic) one would be cut off and the other started... i dunno!

Substituting a straight-through cable where a cross-over cable is required, or vice versa, will mean the two devices won't be able to talk to each other. Unless one or the other has an "auto detect" port on it.

Colours of cables don't tell you whether they are straight-through or cross-over. You have to put the connectors side by side and see if the colours of the wires going to each pin are in the same order. Or have been smart and labelled all your cross-over cables.

The usual means to find out whether devices are able to talk to each other over ethernet is to do a ping from the PC. But that requires knowing enough about the other device to know what IP address it defaults to. That'll be in the documentation somewhere.

thanks gordon - that helped..

Well to be honest i DONT think its the cables... In my old house (24hrs prior) i had the same set up BUT only using a different router now.... I am using the same original ethernet cable when it worked fine which went from virgin cable modem > router in my old house as i tried last night in my new house... From that would you agree its probably NOT the ethernet cables?

If its the same cable then no I would say it isnt the ethernet cable. Sounds like Virgin being ghey

Doubt its the cables. Can you plug a computer into the modem direct instead of the router and see if you get a connection? That will show wether its the router or not.

Mmm cheers ras, its looking that way... Well ive my old router with all cables with me at work so will set it up exactly as round my old house, if that doesnt work then its defo the big fat gayers @ virgin!

H182 : Ive tried that mate... direct connection from Modem > PC and nothing...
