Detailing world scared me!

  Elise 111R
Hi guys

I've been into my cleaning for a while, using most the products that get banded around here and fully understand the proper procedures and technics of what to do.

I also just bought some new products (Dodo wax etc and a lance foam gun) and saw that the megs pc for sale coming soon.

I thought umm early Xmas present GREAT!

But I have been reading detailing world for the past 2 hours (how sad is that) and now very worried on a couple of accounts and im hoping you guys will be able to answer them without any techy nonsense getting in the way.

1) Do i need to buy a paint correction gauge?
Reading DW i would be stupid and suicidle not to have one and they look really expensive
2) Can i really do that much damage to my car by being slow and sensible.
I want to basically get rid of the swirls the wax hides nothing more?
3) Is there anyone in the area who can help me? I kept reading Andy C on DW is very open to tuition but is there anyone in the Portsmouth area who would be happy after new year to show me the way?

What i'm after is a good / ok finish which i can enjoy not something resembling professional but i dont want to mess my 182 up by thinking im capable of more than i am?

Cheers

Tom

Guy on here called Ady182 does detailing, lives in Portsmouth too. Did a nice job on mine, I'm sure he'll be able to offer better advice mate. Paint correction gauges are overkill unless your planning on doing detailing as a professional business.

Using a PC a paint gauge is not essential, when you get into real defect correction with a rotary where you are able to remove a bigger amount of clearcoat they are needed.

If you know the history of you car, if it has ever been machined before and you use normally methods of correction that are no overly aggressive you should be fine using common sense. Most Clio paint reading I have sen have a decent amount of paint on.

Unless you pay lots of money for an expensive one which tells you the depth of each layer of the painted surface you will still be using guess work to decide how much clearcoat there is anyway.

The Porter Cable is easy to master, start of with a mild pad and polish combo an take it from there.

Ah cheers guys, also i hope my post doesn't sound like i'm bashing DW.com there seems like there is a lot of guys with a lot of good advice. I think its about how far you want to take it.

As i said i'm getting some dodo wax middle next week, i didn't order the dodo prime.... was that a mistake and should i really get it? my gut feeling is i dont need it till i get my megs?

Oh also poorboys wheel sealant... is it a case of cleaning the wheels, claying (if necessary) and thinly coating on or is there again a step i may of missed?

Cheers guys.

Lime Prime is a nice product, if your using wax over a sealant the Lime Prime will have no place, but is a good product if you want to go straight to wax after it. I was not that taken by the Dodo waxes 100% but like the Purple Haze enough to replace CG 50/50 in that price range so have grabbed a pot this week too.

I use the Poorboys Sealant standalone, or over Autoglym Super Resin Polish/and or Extra Gloss. You will get better results from it if you polish the wheels first. There are other wheel sealants that polish and seal if that is more handy for you.
