road trip across europe

hi all just needed some advice as i am taking my 172 on a road trip across europe in september. i will be stopping off at monza the stelvio pass and the nurburgring last (for obvious reasons). i will be getting insurance abroad and aa cover but i dont know if its worth looking into insurance for the ring if its worth it or if anyone will be stupid enough to insure me! has anyone done anything similar i could do with some advice!?

well its me and a few mates going with various cars. i reckon the whole trip will cost around 600 inc ferry petrol food spending money and to go round the ring. basically a bag full of clothes a tent and a jerry can full of petrol is going in the back of my car and thats it. also need to get some grooved brake discs etc. cant wait for the stelvio pass and the ring. will also be going to milan to the ferrari factory and to monza!

IF i'm honest unless you drive like a complete idiot on the ring i'd say it's just as safe as a normal road. When i was there it was people spinning off, no one crashed into each other.

Id disagree completely. Its a race track, yes im aware its a "public road" but try explaining that to someone with limited/no track experience. When i went 2 people died and there was about 4 closures in one day, now exactly a typical scenario on a public road, heck the UK alone in one day alone get similar statistics.

In regards to the original post, insurance is something you can throw out of the window. You wont be covered for the ring, yes the ol "but its a public road" does sound a brilliant excuse but insurance companies now even specify in their t&c's that the Nurbugring is excluded so as far as insurance is concerned, you have none. There are specialised insurance companies for track days but expect to pay an absolute fortune.

I'm not recommending this in the slightest but what i did was get ADAC breakdown cover (they will pick you up off the ring and get you and your passengers home either by car or plane) and get your car home anywhere in Europe. I didnt even bother with insurance other than phone (you need to phone them to tell them your going, even if your policy says you have automatic european insurance) and get cover for France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. If i crashed on the ring, id pay the bill for the damage to armco etc and try my luck with insurance that i crashed "outside". The chances are you would get nowhere but its the risk i and most people take.

When I was there they didnt appear to close it unless they really had to.

can't comment about car insurance but you want to ensure that you've got a EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before you go and, if it helps, Insure&Go (health insurance) insured a mate and I for the 'ring within the confines of one of their standard policies. it was cheap (£15 from memory) and provided full cover with the exception of their usual public liability cover.

cheers well no i'll push my car but i know its limits and i know if theres someone up my arse not to race him just let him by. im aiming for an under 10 mins time do u think that is reasonable? well i live in scotland so we're getting the ferry from rosyth to zeebrugge then through germany on the autobahns probably stayin in stuttgart for a night then over the alps to milan. go to the ferrari factory monza etc then onto the stelvio pass before heading to the nurburgring. probably be about a 10 day trip costing roughly 600 quid. should be good fun my mates all have pretty quick cars too.

the worst thing at the ring is to set a time in your head that you want to get to or beat as thats when more mistakes can kick in, thus make an accident more likely

My insurance covers me for organised track days and 4x4 events.
As long as I wear helmet I'm covered (along with a few other requirements).

It was also the cheapest cover I could find at £375 fully comp.
(I'm 22 and have a DR10 (Drink driving) on my licence, which will be removed in feb. Yay cheap insurance)

I'm with HIC.
(There is a £1000 excess if you haven't done a track day before, or £500 if you have done one before and can prove it).

Hmmm that budget seems rather small tbh!! Ive done Leeds to Rome and back twice and both times ive ended up spending at least £1200 all in! Great experience though! I can strongly reccomend the roads leading from Monte Carlo leading up over the alps!! They are immense!!

it probably will be more as im going with a passenger so it will probably be nearer a bag of sand after halfing petrol, ferry etc. well we thought on monaco but its a bit out of the way. if u seen the 1st top gear of the last series that'll be most of the roads we'll be going on. also looked into a track day at monza but they seem to be few and far between. we mite catcha gt race or something tho.

PS. Don't bother with insurance at the Ring.

FWD in the dry you'll be fine (as long as you're not thicker than pig s**t)

yeh thats wot i think. basically if it rains im not goin near the place no tc and abs in the wet at the ring! have more chance of staying alive being hit by a bus. altho one of my mates is taking an old alfa gtv. 1984 rwd stripped out with around 150bhp so i suppose it could be worse!

im not sure yet but we're sharing it because the breakdown covers the driver not the car so if any 1 of the cars breaks down its covered by 1 policy.

Or if your with HIC its free, just call them and let them know your going, otherwise you have tpft cover, if you call though and tell them, its fully comp.
