How much bhp is needed to run the power steering?

  ValverInBits
Have you ditched it then mark? mkII ran without PAS for a while and thought he could feel the car pick up a little better (1.2 8v)

mini-valver

Get a saxo pump if you want to keep PAS but not on engine power....

Maybe 1-3 bhp, but dont forget the pump, pipes and fluid must weigh abit! So that might be worth 1 bhp alone.

i thought the power steering was electric and didnt use pumps

certinally isnt on clios. Even if twas electric, it still has to get the energy from somewhere. Doesent matter if the altenator takes the power or the PAS pump does

It's hydraulic on the Renault Sport Clios, electric on everything else.

The whole rack, hydraulic fluid resevoir, pump, and associated pipes/tubes etc. all weighed approx. 20-25kgs.

Manual one? Maybe 10-15 kgs?

So a 10 kgs gain in therory - would up my power to weight to 192/ton...add another 2 bhp as well, and I'm at 194/ton.

So if that's the case, I just need to change the passnger seat and take their airbag out and I'm at 200.

So here's a question, does power steering increase your emissions?

No because the engine is exactly the same.

Although in theory it affects your MPG as it weighs more and saps a bit of power.

So removing it does reduce your carbon foot print, in theory of course.

Surely, none on the rollers, because whilst the wheel isn't been turned the pumps aren't running?

Sadly very little.

As before passenger seat and airbag next...but apart from that there's not a great deal that the car doesn't need.

Smaller battery maybe, lighter suspension possibly, but after that I'll be adding weight again with a cage :(

Yep. Which is all any of us have to go on when talking about car performance after all.
