Really bad tyres - your experiences please

I know there's hundreds of threads on here about tyres but after crashing my car due to the pair of Avents (never heard of them before) on the rear i'm REALLY thinking hard about what tyres I replace them with the second the car comes back from repairs.

My list of possible replacements so far consists of Kumho KH11, Toyo T1-R, Conti sport and Eagle F1.

What i want to know is are there any tyres that i really should be avoiding? Has anyone had tyres so bad that they had to change them straight away, or had an accident because of them?

I'll start the list of crud rubber;

Avent (sorry i dont have the full details of them but the previous owner put them on and I don't have my car at the mo)

i had fullrun tyres on my turinis 205/45 r16s, they were great in the dry, leathel in the wet, the amount of near missis i had was unreal, only cost £100 for all 4 though

they're just a really cheap tyre - lots of different cheap brands about. i don't even know if they offer a RS Clio size.
had some on the back of a previous car and they were easily the worst tyre i've ever used; things may have changed though

I had some fortunas on the front of my old 172, proper leathal, had to drive like a granny in the wet, really don't know how they past any safety tests. Great in the dry though.

I bought my 182 about 4months ago and it has got 'Sunny' front tyres. They aint jokin! If they were called 'Rainy' I would do them under the trade descriptions act! It is hilarious having to back off dramatically when there is the slightest bit of moisture on the road.

I have 195/45/16 kumho kh11s on my 1.2 all round as they were cheap when i bought the 172 alloys for it. In the dry they refuse to let go, grip perfectly. In the wet they are utterly useless, understeer is hellish if you are not really careful. Seeing as you have a 172 i would defo avoid.

stay away from nankang, were on my car when i bought it and they do look awesome (nice thread design) but they are awful in the wet, sliding around roundabouts at low speed.....

why arent you considering pe2's btw....?

I have Kumho KH11 on the front at the moment and have no problems with them at all, but obviously i have nothing to compare them to.

Coming from a mk4 Golf GTI that understeers like a b**ch i'm bound to find anything a vast improvement though!

you don't have to spend on premium tyres - a lot of the mid-priced brands are very good and aren't really far off; some are even better than the premiums (edit. subjectively). just avoid the real cheapies

I crashed my 172 entering the motorway slip road on a bend after having Toyo T1-S's fitted . Crap tyres imo , Exaltos walk all over Toyos imo .

You won't have to buy PE2's as often as other tyres though - Michelins tend to last longer than most.

I'm gonna be a bit nervous about the back end for a while when i get the car back no matter what tyres i put on but i just want to make sure that nobody else has had a bad experience with any tyres that i'm considering.

The Toyo T1-R and Kumho KH11 seem a reasonable price but i'm just worried they aren't good enough.

I may just stick to Contisport, if they're good enough for Renault then i spose they're good enough for me

T1-R's are fantastic on my cup. Did a track day on them, great in the dry and just as good in the wet. wore out quick though, but cheep.....

I'm guessing this crash you had will cost you more than a few sets of Michellins... They're more expensive than the others for a reason.

I had Nankang on my car until very recently when the wheels spun in 1st and 2nd while pulling out onto a roundabout cos it was slightly damp, i couldnt get any traction, needless to say after a few sideways roundabout experiences i decided i want suicidal, now have goodyears on my car.

Also avoid "Triangles" at all costs

IMO A539s are fine in the dry, dreadful, seriously p1ss poor in the wet. the worst I've had on my 172. Yoko's in the past I've really liked. Best tyre by far, again just my opinion is the Goodyear F1. Miles better than the Continentals and Pirellis I've had.

I'd avoid the A539s and deffo avoid Avons and Kumho (which my car came with). Along with 17" wheels, had wheelspin in 3rd on M'way slip roads in the wet. Not clever.

A520s were lethal in the wet - not the best choice on a modded ERST... lol

Toyo T1-S were shite in so many ways, I'm never buying them again.

Current Kumho's aren't actually that hideous it seems, but they squeal a lot in the dry. Which is annoying when you're making progress and trying not to draw attention to yourself... lol

F1s are my current tyre of choice and until I find the funds to try PE2s it will remain that way until they stop making them.

I'm guessing this crash you had will cost you more than a few sets of Michellins... They're more expensive than the others for a reason.

£400 a set compared to maybe £250-300 for a set of good alternatives is quite a big factor in my current financial circumstances.

pe2s rule mate... i wouldnt skimp, we have all experienced shiite tyres and id rather pay £20 more a tyre than crash due to a inferior compound that didnt like a bit of standing water or something.

i like to stick with what it came with tbh as i know that i can press on without having to worry.

when you get the toyos im sure your going to have to tread carefully, or be unsure of what grip may available come a sudden corner if your driving out of the area etc.

for such a lightweight car with fairly substantial power, it makes sense to ensure the fundamentals, ie brakes, tyres and suspension are up to scratch.

never had toyos, although had good experiences with goodyear eagle f1

That's why i've decided on a Contisport for now. I've just discovered that my spare is a brand new Contisport that's never even seen outside the boot. I'm gonna put one of my crud tyres on the spare and then just buy 1 Conti. £80 for the whole job, nice.

I'd always prefer to have matching tyres on the same axle but I may experiment with something else when my Kumhos on the front need replacing in 6 months or so

True on one side of the coin.. But then what about that one moment where a bit more tyre grip would've seen you away from a crash when you were driving well within the limits.

Perhaps it's wet and something flies out infront of you, I don't know. But there will always be a possible situation where having slightly better tyres will see you in a better position (imo tbh).

i had a set a pirelli p6000 changed straight away althoughim sure they had sat in the workshop for so long that the rubber compound had gone rock solid was like driving it on an ice rink in the wet and dry uter shite never touched again on uniroyal rainsports now really like them
