GAZ COILS!!!!

Hi Guys,

Ive been running Gaz GHA coils on my 182 now for about 2 months and in this time a few things have become quite clear.

Ive read reviews/comments from members on CS and majority seem to be of the negative persuasion. Now i havent tried H&R etc although my flat mate runs Teins on his impreza so im aware of what to expect from good suspension.

Im really impressed with the Gaz setup and if im brutally honest i find they are a little soft!!! I run the fronts about 3/4" away from the front wheel and i have them cranked to the hardest setting and they feel no stiffer than the 60mm springs i had on my 1.6 Clio 3 months ago.

Ive just got off the phone to Gaz and ive ordered some firmer springs for the front at the princely sum of £18+vat per side plus postage.

The reason i want a stiffer front end is, under heavy driving or fast tight bumpy turns they scuff a bit. And apparently adjusting the top of the fronts will only adjust the rebound?? (or did he say damping) any who he said to make them firmer i would have to send them back to be re-valved at the cost of £25+vat a side.

So for the money £439 from balance motorsport i really cant fault them (albeit my driving style forces me to purchase hard springs) and i just wanted to voice my appreciation for Gaz as i felt the comments ive read on CS are just not representative of the joy i get from my setup, perhaps they have been revised recently i forgot to ask lol.

I wasnt planning on writing an essay so i better stop writing at some point.

All comments are welcome i base my findings purely from what i have experienced. Im well aware people have had bad experiences with Gaz but i am not one who has.

I wouldn't fit them to any car I owned if you gave them to me TBH. Been there done that won't be making the same mistake again. Abysmal suspension.

They ruin the car, they are soooo unrefined its untrue tbh!!!!

Craig - seriously when i first put them on i set them as soft as they would go and they were as soft as standard 182 cup suspension.

Gaz generally have a v good reputation esp in Motorsport. However i do agree that the 182 set up is horrific!

Imo H&R arn't that great either...

Non, my car was enough tbh!!! They are totally unsuited for road use. Clunking/noisey valves in the rear shocks, (x2 sets) non progressive springs, poor build with leaking seals is not good in my eyes. Damping/rebound is all over the place also.

Not a daft comment when people are talking in context of RS clio's. As for not wanting them on another car I'm not really interested in whether they aren't slated for other cars I personally wouldnt spend my money on a product made by a company after having a bad experience with them in the past.

H&R's make the OE set up on 911 GT3's, speaks volumes IMO.

We've used GAZ before on the caterham, we did swap to Bilsteins, but alot of the front runners were still using them... Can't tar all brands with the same brush!

If i was to change from GAZ it would be to KW's! I've driven GAZ,Leda,FK,H&R, Apex, Eibac and KW's and the KW's were the best allround for road, didn't try them on track. -

Gaz is pants... the closest they get to 'Motorsport' is Stockhatch which IMO, doesn't really count when its people on a very tight budget running old XR2s and Saxos.

Not many kits for the Clios are going to be good at circa £500, and the funny thing is if you want a decent road damper then you probably have to spend more because having somethign good for the track and road is reserved for expensive kits that have nice beefy dampers with huge piston sizes, allowing you to run soft springs, therefore getting a nice ride still.

Point out a respected manufactuer of high performance cars that uses Gaz that was the point I was trying to make

I'm yet to drive Leda's or KW's but of the kits I've experienced the H&R's came out on top IMO the Gaz were worse than a set of £99 Apex springs if you ask me. All I'd say is to those looking for a suspension kit around the £500 mark I would suggest perhaps coilovers are out of their budget and rather than buying cheap tat get a decent damper and spring kit instead.

Yeh i'd agree with that. Eibac sportlines were as good as coils imo!! I will prove this when i get another 172...

Infact i need not, look at Mark's cup! Nuff said really. Std set up and untouchable on track.

They then bodge them on with a mate and the car never sees as much as a set of dunlop gauges let alone a proper 4 wheel alignment ramp or corner weighting. They'll also sacrifice ride and handling simply to get the car as close to the tarmac as possible.

Mines bloody low, but i know it's well set up! Alot of time went into fitting and setting up. Plus it's a bespoke kit, everything down to the instructions are step my step in diagrams for the V6...It's top end stuff...Much like the Ohlins imo.

I remeber the konigsports i had before, Quote from IF motorsport "They are fcukin shite!" Should of bought leda's. I spend Nealy as much setting them up as i did 'on them' - They were ok on track, but Horrific on the road! Darted about the place.
