dual layer dvd drives.

I am currrently looking to get a dual layer burner, so I can burn to 8gb discs but I have a couple of questions for you tekkies..
1. How would I know if my current drives have the capability to burn to dual layer, without trying it?
2. I have used both my slots for drives so would I have to purchase an external drive or is there no reason why I couldn't use an internal, externally?
3. Are there any makes/brands of drive you would recommend or advise against?
4. Are there any makes/brands of 8gb discs you would recommend or advise against?

Cheers

I wouldn't bother with dual layer discs and a dual layer burner . Just download " Clonedvd " it rips , shrinks down to fit onto a 4.7gb disc and burns all in one . I always use dvd's using Ritek G05 dye .

Would this work for xbox 360 backups though?
Am going to backup my games as some are getting scratched.
I got the SATA card to connect my dvd drive to my PC. I have made a couple of iso images but thought I would need a dual layer disc.

i've personally always found dual layer burning somewhat a pain in the ass tbh. Just in my experience using nero 7 a brand new writer with new discs...never works right or doesn't work in every machine etc etc...

1) You need a modded 360 to play backups
2) You need a DL Burner thats capable of bitsetting
3) You need a DVD drive capable of reading xbox 360 games (eg. Kreon) or to take apart an DVD drive thats suitable (eg. pioneer a04)
4) if you do manage all that, if you don't do it right (and even if you do) you may be banned from XBL.

If you bought your 360 recently then you may have a drive that cannot (at this time) be modded.

Got my SATA card delivered today so am going to mod it tonight.
Is about 2 years old so shouldn't be a problem.
Can you recommend a burner?

Have you tried this then? and got it working?
Am not bothered about xbox live anymore either..
hardly ever play online atm. If I do Ill just buy another 360. Is the process non reversable then?

Be careful when modding, you can brick your 360 !

I use a pioneer 110D, its a bit older now so there is probably better/cheaper out there now.

Im not sure which part your refering to when you said is it reversable.

The process of modding is reversible as long as you keep your original firmware somewhere safe ! (gmail it to yourself, then burn it to disk etc)

The xbox live ban is not reversible.

yeah I am fully aware you can brick it.. I have been adapting the firmware of my psp doe atleat 2/3 years now with no adverse results. I was referring to the un/official dashboard you install, you can still put the original back on?
I realise if you get bnned from live then you need a new console id/ live id to play online again.
Have you regretted modding yours?

i wouldnt f**k about with the beta dash tbh, thats just asking for trouble but you will have no problems with modded firmware as long as you keep it up to date

Don't mess about with the dash. I don't know if its reversible.

I don't have a 360 anymore, I had all three (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii) and decided to get rid of one of them...
