Track day tyre pressures?

  BMW M5 & E36
Varying opinions on this, some say start with road psi or drop a few, some start quite a way down in the mid 20's etc.

Im running Toyo T1R's on the front and Yoko Parada spec 2's on the back, 205/45/16.

Ive got a temp gun to take with me and a foot pump so can have a play throughout the day.

Any pointers?

Start on road psi and see what happens. If the cars stripped out etc i ran 4 psi lower rear to front to start with.

Do a few laps, check scrubbing on sidewalls. Aim for about 1/3-1/2 of sidewall. Put pressure up or down to suit. Do a few more laps etc.

you're sorted if you've got a pyrometer. i'd start with road pressures and go from there. you're measuring the temp across the tyre and aiming to get even temp across it - eg. pump them up if they're cold in the middle.

there are a few things to think about (like the affect of suspension geometry) and they're obv. going to be hottest at the outside of the nearside tyres but it'll help you get into roughly the right area.

you could probably spend ages fiddling with them - so don't let it become a preoccupation on the day!

R888's start normal road pressures after a few laps i dropped to 26F 28R.

Take some chalk with you & mark a line out round to side wall, 12, 3, 6 & 9, if you are wearing out the chalk past the lip more air needed if not let some out.

If the R888's get too hot they wear down badly about 2 inch in from the side wall.

i ran 30 psi front and 36 back with the same tire front and back last weekend. Ambient temp was 36 (bahrain). Car ran perfectly baanced.
