car making a whistling noise from 3k up

Car  182 and cherokee 4.0
i have noticed my car is starting to make a noise which i can only describe as a whistle/grumble when it gets to about 3,000 revs. this isn't the normal whistle which it has always had but is louder and seems to be getting worse. i can't tell where it is coming from. is this likely to be the exhaust going???

any help appreciated :(:S

could be the exhuast you need to get you head in the bay and have a listen. However my bet would be on the aux belt pulley. Have you had the aux belt, tensioner and pulley changed yet?

haven't had the aux done yet. had another listen, it sounds like it is coming from the front, it's a grainy sort of whistle. doesn't sound healthy like. doesn't feel like it is pulling as hard but i'm not sure if that is me over analysing things! what do you suggest? get it in to renault?

aye looks like i'm going to have to do the same. hope it is just the exhaust like. Want the k-tec ultra performance exhaust so it might be a blessing in disguise if it is the exhaust. if not am foamin'!!!

Fairly common for the sealing ring at the front of the cat to leak, caused a squeel type noise when accelerating harshly, its gasses being forced past the gasket / sealing ring.

Aux belt should be done every 3 years or 36,000 miles. You have gone past the 3 years and are close to 36k so it needs to be done.

If its the aux belt pulley going which it could be if its a grainy noise the aux belt might come off and 99% of the time it will take the cambelt out with it which is going to cost a small fortune.

Its also worth poiunting out that the Cambelt will need to be done early next year at the latest as Renualt recomend doing them every 5 years although quite a few on here would do it every 4. So it might be worth while getting both done while your at it seeing as the aux belt has to come off to do the cambelt.

I would take it to a specialist seeing as its out of warrenty and see what they diagnose it as.

EDIT: Might be worth posting in the engines section as you might get more answers to confirm or disagree with mine....

cheers for that. anyone know any places around newcastle??? how much am i looking for to get the aux. belt, tensioners and pulleys done and the cam belt? fortunes?
