In a bit of a dilema?

Hi

I have just bought a few parts for my car, then came to a bit of a dilema. I got me thinking about the future etc. I was just thinking do i really want to be spending all this money on the clio i have got just now? So this is where i am looking for some good solid advice. What should i do:

1. Spend money making my car the now look like a 172 without the actual cost of insurance etc, or
2. Should i just save my money and by the time next summer comes i could sell my car and i would have enough money to buy a 172 or something a bit faster than my car i have the now.

You need to bear in mind that i am only 17 (soon to be 18) and just wondering if anybody could help me out that has been in this situation before.

Save your money, buy a sport get raped on insurance, I gurantee is worth it. When I can borrow my old mans 172 it is the most fun I have!

dont waste money making it look like a 172. I recon buy bits you could put onto a 172 if you got one in a year or so. Get good suspension and brakes and live with the fact a 1.2 is a good car for a 17 yr old

yea it seems like the best option it just makes me jelous that everybody is posting about new mods etc on here then i post and i dont really have anything to boast about and dont get many replys

If you have the money to run a 172 next year then save your cash and go for that but if you'll only have the money to buy it and not the extra needed to fund the rest of it then mod your car just now, just dont go overboard

I think that i could afford to run it etc, to be honest i am not sure whether i would go for a 172. I think i would be inclined to get a seat ibiza sport diesel or something similar cupra sport and get it remapped . I think i am just going to sell the parts i have bought.

how about buy a cheaper 172 now, spend the money you want to spend on your car tidying it up ready for next year when you can insure it?

Im the same, im 18 and nearly every month decide i want a new car because mine is a bit dirty, has a bulb out, has squeaky brakes etc. I normally end up giving it a good clean and doing something simple and I love my car again and think i would be mad for selling it.

you might want to bare this in mind as i was in a similar position,

For the price of the insurance quote i got for a 172 and the cost to buy a similiar year / mileage car as mine i was able to modify my car to look like a sport, pay for insurance (with all mods declared) roadtax, mot and petrol for 5 years for the same price as just one years insurance and the cost of the car of the 172.

i rarely use my car, often only twice a week to get to uni (most of which is stuck in traffic) and in the 4 years that i had my previous car i only covered 10,000 miles. so for me it made sense to not got with the 172 (as much as i would have loved one) as it was the more financially viable option and being a student that is important.

Mate i'm selling you parts ands i still think you should save for a 172 lol. I think you will regret ploughing money into this car when you add up everything you spend on it you would have a big chunk that could have gone towards the 172

thanks for all the comments, i am just a bit fed up of the car i have just now and it is reasonably old now (2000) i just want something with the speed but not necessarily the insurance price. I think i have decided that i am going to save up and buy some form of new car next year, not neccessarily a 172 etc

exact same as me haha. i'll probably keep the 1.2 until i know for sure a can afford a 172. dont really want to get into any sort of situation where a cant run the thing. i'm modifying the car av got just now, that'l keep me happy until then.

Its what I did, stuck with a 1.4 until I was old enough for good insurance and good afford a 182 with low miles for cash, now I love it and Ive got the money to run it and buy silly mods like aeros etc

plus driving a lower powered car when you younger gives you the time to build up driving experience and get the all important no claims under your belt, you'd be surprised what 2 years NCB can do for insurance quotes!!!

Yeah but the more you mess with your car the more you will devalue it, mate I'm only21 so I'm not exactly old! Sold my old car to A lovely old dear too so just chill with your car, sure fit silvervisions, alloys etc but keep the original stuff and whatever you do don't make it like some of the wrecks you see on autotrader.

na im not going massive spoiler route lol i am going the ph1 172 route. Can anybody recommend a fast car that has a low insurance group? i have looked at the ibiza sport diesel only group 7 any other ones?

+1 i'm planning on being KY Jellyied by insuance next august when i'm 19 for a 182. I'm young living at home with a full time job so why not. I'll still have money for going out etc

Can you recommend a faster can with lower insurance group? I know most people have clio tunnel vision on here but anybody help out of the clio box lol ?

I'm 17 and soon to get my first road car (1.2 16v Clio).

I plan on modifying it but keeping all (or mostly all) original parts, so I can sell the car on in factory spec when i'm done with it, and have the aftermarket parts to sell on.

Fine, I WILL lose money on the car and parts, but in the process of modifying the car I will have learnt lots, not just how to fit parts or what exhaust sounds best, but how different things effect vehicle dynamics, the general handling limits/behaviour of a hatch/FF car, etc.

I also hope to create a good relationship with local performance/bodywork shops, making them that much more inclined to give you extra help, let you use their car ramps/pit before lockup, etc.

Getting insured on even a relatively quick car is a pain in the arse for young drivers, so I intend to enjoy driving and spending money on my 1.2 up until the time that my insurance company won't expect bodyparts for payment on a quick car.

It is very nice but looks like a modded 172, there would be no point selling your car for another that isnt the one you really want. PH1 s can look great imo

Doesnt take much cash to do the mods you see there

Option 2 mate deffo, I'm doing that now (with slightly more expensive cars albeit) but saving for a 197 next year hopefully and just doing cheap subtle mods to the car i have now
