Overclocking PC Processor.

  172 cup
I have just upgraded my ram to try and increase my computer performance. I have a 3.20Ghz PEntium D Dual Core and now have 3.00 GB RAM. I am just wondering if I could push abit more processing capability out of it? I have overclocked handheld PCs before but never my processor on my main pc.
I know there are quite a few techy people on here so any advice?

iirc, and i may be wrong, but i'm fairly sure that range of processor doesn't have much room to manouevre. Maybe look on the overclockers.co.uk forum for some help

+1

I don't think you'll easily get much more out of that processor except magma TBH. I'm fairly sure they're not known for easy overclocking abilities.

YEah have had a look around few other forums and your right. Not worth doing really.
Shame but it runs quick enough for the time being. Cheers.

Your mobo is socket 775. For c. £130 you could pop a Core2 in there that would tear your pentium a new one?

Really? What sort of increase would I get from that? or what spec?
I dont really know much about the hardware side of things.

cheers.

depends what you front side bus speed is but theorteically could could probably double the speed of whate you have in there atm...you would need more info on your motherboard really

Good point. I'm guessing it's currently 800fsb. Looks like an E4600 would run at 2.4Ghz in there, and would probably still own the pentium.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
All potentially - the Pentium D shipped with 955X and 975X chipsets of which not all boards could run Core2 chips due to a change in the specifications - even though many of them originally advertised this.

However, trying to get more out of a Pentium D is just going to result in a very warm house with very little improvement! They're dirty old dogs and run at a million degrees...

Every day's a school day :)

LOL @ a million degrees

Seriously... Clocked my 3.4GHz Pentium D to 3.6GHz on liquid and still hit 90 degrees with it!

Desperately bad decision to weld two already hot processor cores together, but without it we'd not be where we are today!

New PC. Do it.

Ive just bitten the bullet.

£240 For a Q6600, 2GB of OCZ 1066 Nvidia Sli ram, and an EVGA 680i motherboard. Hopefully guna buy a graphics card today at some point as well. so thatll be an extra £90. Think im guna wait a while after this and buy a new cooling fan and a new power supply and start overclocking it.

Buy mine. Already a shiteload faster, and plenty of room for overclocking. On my X38 board I've had 3.8GHz out of my Q6600, 28 hours Prime stable...

Not really got the cash to buy a new pc atm.
New house, and all the associated cost that go with it..

£500 and you can have a watercooled system running a Q6600 (2.4GHz Quad), 2 DVD-RWs, 2 74GB HDDs, 8800GTX, 1kW Power Supply, HD Audio...

As a Pentium D wouldn't be particularly cheap...

of course i mean the dell, you should overclock your new setup as a matter of priority, pointless havng it otherwise!

Buy mike's, wish i had watercooled mine!

Go on, you know you want to...

4GB RAM, 2.4GHz Quad... The machine can play Crysis on 1680x1050 Medium detail all day long... Which is more than playable!
