i currently have a 172 cup with a few upgrades but am seriously thinking about moving to a 197 f1 or 197 with cup chasis but have heard some arnt as fast as others. is this just hear say or should i be trying a few to make sure i get a good 1, or would i be dissapointed after my 172 cup. cheers

I made the move from the 172 Cup to a 197 and have never looked back. It does everything the Cup could whilst looking/braking/handling better!

Its a delivers it speed different to that of the Cup, but it is as quick once the engine is run in, and mine pulls like a train now on 5K.

The performance in a 197 is not as fast top end as a cup, but is a tad faster than the standard 172 and a tad slower than the 172 cup 0-60.
There is some truth that there are performance differences in 197s, there are 2 different maps from the factory, very early ones had the decent map, then late 2006 - early 2008 they were slightly restricted which caused a slight dip in torque. Then from March 2008 onwards they were shipped with the decent maps again.
So a 2008 with cup packs will probably have the decent map, and an F1 may or may not.
You can have the maps loaded under warranty, as the slightly restricted versions caused cold-start issues.

The Cup is rawer, purer and inevitably more satisfying a challenge to drive. And its faster.:quiet:
Keep the Cup and simply REMOVE the bits that you don't need. Performance thru LIGHTweight. Something 197's lack.

. Kev what colour are you considering?yeah i know what you mean, i want to chop mine in for an R27 F1, a late 08 plate in nimbus! If you can get hold of one of these, its the ultimate 197 in my opinion.
yeah but got the cup t shirt and need a new challenge. it does punch well above its weight though, impretzas dont know whats hit them.
second hand, already drove a megane, nowhere near as good to drive plus i like small light cars.

That is a very good point.
Then again after reading ECOTY in EVO this month, a R27.R is the only one i'd want.
but none of us can afford 1 of those.
the megane just feels ordinary and cant be chucked around like a clio, and i really fancy a track day, my mates have a 182 trophy a megane trophy and another a 197 f1 so would be immense.
my cup beats his trophy like, alot more bottom end but mine does have a cat back exhaust on it. quite twitchy compared to a trophy though.

The weight will play a big part im sure, cant imagine a 197 would be much if any quicker, better brakes but bar that on the road as a driving experience i dont think there could be much in it

Plenty cars better than the S2000's personally i dont think theyre that good, couple mates had them, i wasnt impressed

I say go for it, drove my sisters 172 a few years back and it was quick. But 197 is a different animal, plenty of power when you need it. I did come from a 1.2 though lol
