8gig of ram over 4gig (vista 64)

Well it aint going to be doing any harm thats for sure.

But will you really need it is the question you should ask. I know RAM is cheap now but its all beer money ;)
 
ok...well do i need it?....

i'm a heavy gamer, encode plenty of films...thats about it.
 
will windows usage in general benefit? anyone had much experience? mike182?
 
4GB is ample, definitely at the moment. But deploying 8GB is making it future proof, RAM wise.
 
I would personally say no, if its just for gaming. I think the 4GB that I've got is a little overkill, tbh. Nothing as of yet really uses that much.

Id go for 4gig as putting 8 in to furtureproof it would a good idea but by the time anything will actually use it, the ram will be out dated and poo :rasp:

Unless you going triple channel then 6gig

Worth it on 64-bit as you're actually going to be running with less RAM on a 4GB system running 64-bit software than you are running 32-bit software, due to the increased overhead of 64-bit software.

I'd say keep it and stick it in the machine. If it cost you any more than £40 then they saw you coming, and at that money it's not worth tossing about for.
 
If you got it already and didnt pay to much for it then would agree with Mike but if it cost you a few bob i would send it back. Which ram is it?

Thats right because EVERY brand of memory is the same Specification and cost!

No, but I (fatally, in this case) assumed that if someone was daft enough to ask the muppets on here instead of on a specialist forum then they'd have just bought normal RAM.

Dominator stuff is quite nice - not my personal preference as I'm an OCZ man myself but still. :star:

Definately keep it still. 8GB does actually make a hell of a difference in Vista x64. Due to the way it deals with memory, the more you throw at it the better it gets. :)
 
Isn't the general consensus that anything over PC-6400 (800MHz) RAM is fairly pointless unless you're doing some serious overclocking?
 
right well i don't really consider myself daft, this has always just been , my first point of call. hardly makes me daft for asking people on cliosport where there is alwaysa wealth of info around.

Anyway. Think i'll try out 8g then and gauge it. If it's much better in windows i'll just keep it. The only reason i got that ram to start with was because i had 3 sets of ocz sli ram fail 1 after the other...so i've got this stuff from OCUK as compensation...so i figured, mayaswell get another set to upgrade to 8gig, although we'll see if it makes any difference.

So what your saying is to ask a technical question in a IT/techical section of a car forum instead of a specialist forum that your only going to get muppet answers?
Firstly, that suggests you yourself are a muppet along with the rest of us, and secondly I love the way you always thing you are the be all and end all when it comes to IT.
Im sure you are very well knowledged when it comes to PC building, but instead of ever passing on that knowledge to someone who asks a sensible question you find the need to mock them.
I suggest you take yourself and your PC Review magazines off to the "specialist forums" and stop frequenting this muppet forum....
 
To be fair, I think he meant ask on there instead of this forum. As people would be more knowledgegable in that forum as it's dedicated area.

However, it does not mean that we don't have some specialists here.

If I want answers on how to fix my Audi, I don't ask you here. If I want answers on how I would have asked to fix my old Clio, I wouldn't have asked on the S2Forum...

An observation of here is 90% of the technical section is pub experts. If you don't like it then I shaln't apologise - as is mentioned so much on here when people don't like someone's car "We're all entitled to our opinions".
