I think about this sort of stuff...It's the Inner VAGEWith a 1080p signal, its actually recommended you sit a lot closer to the TV then watching an SD signal (or interpolated / upscaled signal), sometimes as close as a several feet!

Sky+ HD is on the way, when Sky actually get round to f**king installing it. The thing is we have about a million DVDs, and BluRay will probably be obsolete soon. I'll wait for the next big thing, which won't be far away.

Roffles again at the next big thing. Wait for that and you'll also be getting another telly. You can still play your DVDs in a Blu-ray player, but any new movies you buy or rent, would be Blu-ray, and would look much better on your telly than DVD. No brainer TBH but whatever turns you on.

Reasons not to buy a Blu-Ray player:
-They are very expensive, and the prices have yet to come down significantly.
-The Blu-Ray discs themselves are very expensive. We bought a DVD for £3 and the same film in Blu-Ray was £19. Not to mention a lot of films don't exist in Blu-Ray and we already have a massive collection.
-Seeing as Blu-rays still play DVDs and the price differences, we will be continuing for now to buy and rent new films on DVD so they can be watched still in the future.
-We do not have a surround sound system, and not really enough money or room and right lounge set up for one. So out of the HD picture and HD sound we are already lacking the hardware for the sound half.
-We are already very happy of the quality of DVDs we play on our HD TV. It is significantly better than quality of normal TV.
-Unless you watch close enough to see close up details (we sit far from the screen), Blu-ray won't look much better than DVD, so nevermind DVDs played on Blu-ray players!
-Blu-ray players do not "enhance" normal DVDs as such. They upconvert/upscale them in order to change the resolution at the source and do some software clean up on the image but the results are very dubious. At the end of the day a DVD is not and will never be HD, and changing the signal to do so will only enhance the imperfections, especially if you're watching an old film.
So just to say "I have the latest technology", there's no point being a sheep and following the hype unless you've got some money to waste and have got a high quality surround sound system and a 50" Full HD TV you sit right in front of...
So for me, THAT is a no brainer and I'll take my vagina back - I rest my case and kick your balls!

It's still £180 wasted when I have a perfectly good quality DVD player.
I rent all my blu-ray films from Lovefilm which costs the same price as renting DVD's and nearly every new film out is available in Blu-Ray
Ok, that's good - I did not know that. But I hardly ever rent films anyway.

I also have car that goes to 138mph, doesn't mean I should drive it at that speed every day. My PC is capable of running the latest graphic applications - does not mean I should buy them all.
There has to be a point to something. I got that TV because it still offers better quality picture that the old CRT (that died anyway), and is put to good use because of its size and Sky+ HD coming up.
Still can enjoy HD quality picture which makes a difference
But not enough for me to justify spending £180 to watch a film once in a while.

Round a friend's and in the shops. I can tell you if you stand more than 1-2 meters away you really can't tell the difference (well I honestly can't anyway). In fact it's the same for HD TV but we bought Sky+ HD for Sky+ too.

Yes, but our DVD player is of good quality. You won't get any more out of a DVD simply because it wasn't designed to have more. The HDMI connection won't help that.

I already get much better quality than if I still had our 28" CRT. And with Sky+ HD I'll get the best quality out of it most of the time. All I'll miss out on is slightly better quality (watching from the sofa 3 meters away) when I watch movies on disc, but will save £180 + current Blu-Ray disc prices for that...
So I think unless you're loaded it IS hype. Look, at the end of the day, I'm not saying that Blu-ray is bad - there is no argument that Blu-ray is better than DVD! All I'm saying is that for now I think there is no sufficient reason for me to go to Blu-ray. When my DVD player dies or Blu-ray players are dead cheap then I probably will bother but right now it's just not worth it for me (and probably isn't for most people yet either)...
