Clay.... (n00b content)

My car has never been clayed in the past 8 years of it's life, and I think it should be done really. It has some horrible contamination on it that polish etc won't remove, so it really needs it.

Any reasonable recommendations for about £15 overall (clay & lube).

Bilt hamber hard clay, trust me 100% with this!

Will pull off so much more crap than the megs stuff, you don't need a lube for it either, just water ;)

See I understand with people saying the megs is great for a beginner, but I've got this horrible "thing" on the roof which I really don't think a soft clay will remove. I mean tar remover and heavy polish don't even touch it. Plus some stone chips are starting to rust.

used some clay for the 1st time today,Bilt Hamber soft............. done my wife's scenic just incase i messed it up but found it very easy to do especially as you use water as the lube, washed the car, clayed it then washed it again then gave it a polish and wax, was very impressed at how smooth the paint felt after claying
would def recommend it, bought it from HERE

Just clayed for the first time couple of weeks ago, how long for the next time you clay your car?

Cheers, heard you can clay your windows is that possible? I'm going to clay my wheels shortly see how they turn out

we clayed the panoramic roof today after removing this graphic as there were a couple of outlines and bits of residue left :

No issues in doing it

Cheers for that, why bother doing the windows is it because when it rains it runs of better? abit like rain-x

we did it to remove the marks... but have applied rain x as it keeps the glass clearer... remember that when using clay on the car you then polish/wax it... the clay just removes tar and other contaminents

For a car that's never been clayed the megs kit isn't enough IMO. One of the cars I've detailed had been parked near a building site for some weeks and there were metal fillings all over the paint which has started to rust, the bilt hamber got all of it off with ease!

I got metal flakes off of a friends car with the megs stuff Rich. Clearly you're s**t at detailing. :p

I disagree tbh , ive done a fair few cars now with different paints and always start by using the megs clay and its not let me down yet.

When I've compared the two I've always find the bilt hamber works much quicker and pulls off more contamination. I'm not saying the megs kit is bad, it's ok if you're after a mild clay, but the OP has said the car has never been clayed and is in a bad state, therefore I'd always recommend the bilt hamber.

fair play but as i said ive done a few in a BAD condition n never touched with clay and with a bit of work it turned out really well. Used a more aggressive clay for lower panels and the slightly worse areas on the car though. Ideal that you can use water as a lube for the BH though

Good work! Yep about 4-5cm or so square is about the size you want once you've flattened it.

Just keep a spray bottle of water to hand and keep things well lubed.

Might be worth having 2 pieces of clay and keeping one in a tub of hot water then switching between them, this keeps the clay workable :)
