with my current engine looking knackered, ive looked around for a replacement, my q is, can/a K4M be used in place of my E7J? straight swap or fabrication needed?
No - its not a straight swap. The E7J is a 1.4 8V engine and the K4M is the 1.6 16v. The wiring loom / ECU will be different. The gearbox will fit and so will the shafts. Personally i would buy K4M 748 out of an early 98 / 99 clio 1.6 16v along with the engine wiring loom / ECU / Plip key / UCH and chassis number off the donor vehicle ( this will help if you ever need an immobiliser code to programme the ECU or order a new key ) . The dash loom will be the same so no need to change that.

Thanks for the reply mate. I'll take that onboard. atm I'm thinking if i buy parts and let garage repair (mucho £££) or swap same engine out/in myself/stepdad if its cheaper (probably, seen same engines from 100-250 on ebay but travelling could be a b**ch.. renault engine place 5 miles away but they want 350 for one.) or like you said i wouldnt mind that either.. one extra query whats an UCH?
